She will be second only to the Empresses as a passenger carrier, and la a bigger steamer than those treat vessels. She will be the largest on the trans-Pacific lines run ning to Victoria. She Is to have ac commodation for 50 first-class passen- gra She will leave Yokohama about September 12th, on her Initial trip to the United States. During Judge Nelson's absence a few days ago. Mayor Bergman, acted as police Judge. An old offender. Rob rt Wllmot. was the only victim to appear before His Honor, and he was told to go forth (minus a fine), and sin no more. At Wilmot. better known as Sellwood Bob, passed out of the city hall, he remarked to an officer, "That'e a bully sort of a fellow, that police Judge Is." Wllmot was Again coralled by the police yesterday hut he found, to his sorrow, that thi "bully fellow" wasn't on the bench. The steam schooner Sue H. Elmore, for ocean traffic between this city and Tillamook Is lying at the Willamette Iron Works In Portland, undergoing the finishing touchee to her machinery and upper works. It Is the intention of the builders to have the schooner ready for her trial trip before the first of the month. Her dimensions are: Length, 90.7 feet; breadth, 23.8 feet, and her depth Is eight feet Her capacity Is 232 tons gross or 131 net. A fine metal life boat Is also under course of construction for her use. The steamer Idxuml Maru, of the Nippon Yusen Kabha line, left Yoko hama for Victoria Wednesday, and the Goodwin and Breconshlre, of the N. P, line, are now on the way. The latter left August 10th. and the former was to have sailed on the 4th if th repairs to her were completed. Since then no advices have been received, and It Is presumed that she left on time. The Breconshlre Is due on the 26th, and the Idiuml on the 29th. The Empress of China, which sails from Yokohama on Friday, will reach Victoria on the day before. William Butts, an old-time pugilist, who has handled Paddy Purtell In many a hard-fought battle, arrived In the city yesterday and took charge of Purtell's preliminary training for hla fight with Jost. Beginning with today, Purtell will do road work until his wind Is sound. From Monday until the hKht Is pulled oft Butts and Purtell will gt together, with the mlts. Both are feeling fine over the prospect for a lively go with Jost. Money around town Is going even that the contest will not exe?ed twelve rounds and that Purtell will carry away the bulk of the proceeds. Off cor Wright tells a story about a young fellow who came to hla notice Thursday night. The lad was evident ly from the rural districts. In his rounds of sight-seeing, he had smelled the odor of stale "booxe" in a dance hall and Imagined he was the best man on earth. He gently reminded the lad that It would be a shame to spill the gore of some Innocent man, and ended his lecture by telling him to go to bed. This, the boy did not wish to do, but friends put him In a hotel. A few moments afterwards, he appeared and not seeing Wright, called out that he waa going to commit suicide, at the same time running toward the river, Wright, who had stationed hlmtdf be hind a pll of lumber conveniently near. Jumped out and caught the fel low. He forgot his rash threat In an instant and pleaded to b permitted to return to bed. A solicitor for a Democratic paper wis arrested by the police Thursday nikht for an act. which, although not criminal, la contrary to th rules and regulations governing the police depart ment. Although working for a Demo cratic paper, the fellow It not averse to gathering in the shekels that are numerous during the present Republi can administration. The lighthouse tender Columbine re turned yesterday from a two-months' I trip to Alaska. While out, the thlp touched ac buka, Juneau, Skagway and Dutch Harbor in Alaska territory. About sixty buoys were placed and many changed. At Seattle Major Lang- by, of the engineer department, as cr,mpanled by Ms wife and child and Mrs. Langby's mother,, were taken aboard and made the trip. Captain Day of the HgV.lDuse board was on the Columbine for the purpose of lo cating sites fcr lighthouses. The sev eral places visited in Alaska, with the exception of Juneau, were found al most deserted. Five large stamp mills were In oreratlon at Juneau. The Col umbine sighted the Manzanibt yester day morning at 1:30 off Umatilla Reef. Officers Wright and Philips are two of this class. Thursday r.lght, as they were passing along Astor street, they heard, what seemed to their trained ears to be, a starter for a free-for-all fight. Turning the corner of a street quickly they came upon a crowd of men. In the center of which was a big fellow minus a coit and with blood In his eye. Some one tipped the crowd at the Instant the officers came upon the scene. The spectators vanished, leaving the fierce-looking Individual alone with the minions of the law. He made a search for his coat, but some one In the crowd had "borrowed" it. The fellow changed his mind about cleaning the street with a few doxen people, and began to upraid the offi cers for permitting some one to steal his coat Wong Leuy, the Chinaman, charged by the coroner's Jury with having caused the death of Wong Ark Toy, waa to have hod a preliminary hearing In Justice Brower's court yesterday af ternoon, but the young man. Ottt Ol sen, the only eye witness to the affair was out of the city, so the trial was 1 postponed until Monday. Olsen is In a small place called Hayes. In Clark county. Wash., and Constable Kelly will go there, pursuade the young man to accompany him to Oregon soil and then serve a subpoena on him. The case Is a rather unusual one, and shows how large as well aa small things, may be overlooked by the authorities, At the time of the murder, the county officials were very busy. Luey wae brought to the county Jail without hav lng a warrant served on htm. The coroner's Jury charged htm with the crime, and he was placed In the county Jail without giving him a preliminary trial. Had Luey been wise he could have demanded and perhaps obtained his release, but for a short time only. While hunting irrow heads about a mile above town yesterday afternoon Rlchnrd Sklbbe and some other chil dren found the body of a dead man partially burl?d In the sand, some five feet from the edge of a slough. The city marshal was noticed, and In com pany with Recorder Gates and Night watchman Like, took charge of the re mains, Recorder Gales, In the absence of Coroner Butts, holding an Inquest, The verdict of the Jury was that the name of the deceased was unknown, and that he probably came to his death by drowning. When found the body was lying face downward, and was In a badly decomposed state, the head having become severed from the body, and the hands boing gone. There was nothing whatever by which it could re Identified, no papers being found upon the body. It was that of a man of medium slxe, with red hair, and was clad in heavy underclothes, blue duck overalls, white sweater and a Jumper. From the condition of the body and the place It was found. Committed Hard at Work Portland Merchants Liberal. Times are lively around regatta headquarters now. Everything; Is as suming tangible shape for the coming celebration. The typewriter was kept merrily clicking late into the night by Secretary McCue, as ne wrote letters to the various Individuals and clubs to assist In making the regatta a suc cess. Secretary McCua says the Portland people will be here In droves. Every one in that city Is interested as much In the regatta as In their own celebra tion. Merchants called upon by the committee donated liberally toward the fund, and also gave many valuable prises for the contests. Those having rooms In Astoria are sending In their names and the crowds will flnu ample accommodations. Al ready the hotels have nearly all of the spare rooms engaged for the week, and the enterprising managers are filling their sample rooms with bunks of all descriptions. Commodore Day will not be here to assume command, but Commodore Ed wards will take his place.
