To the headless, hop-scotch. thumb-bumbled cause h;is flocked the men who are discredited In their own party. C. J. Curtis, asserting that a man has to be a rascal to be In politics in Clatsop county and, In the name breath, admitting that he Is In tdi!l s, is one of their leaders. Well, the hop-stotchers said they had only a little money In the start and as Cur tis proved himself a cheap man when In ofllce, that was probably the rea son they secured him. He fit In with a beadle, outlawed ticket and didn't rout much. f-o far as the men on the hop-scotch ticket are concerned In private life there Is not a word to be fald agulnst any of (hem, but politically they are tramps, driven off 'the ballot by the law because they were Illegally nom inated. In the lot is a lover of Aguln aldo a man who wants to control the education of the children of this coun ty and yet believes that the Philippine savage Is worthy of aid and comfort There is another man who wants to be ifherlft who, not many months ago, vvhn offered the potdUon of chief -of police of this city, declined it because he said he couldn't "understand or keep the boks." What would he do In the sheriff's office? He would be the prey of any and every man who chose to rob him and the taxpayers. Neither Lyman nor Hansen Is a fit man to hold) ofllce by. their own confession- One because he Is disloyal, the other be cause he Is incompetent a a Of the other nominees. Young, for Instance; who Is running for county commissioner, Is ashamed of the posi tion in which be finds himself. He has always been a man wiiling to stand his ground on any question but now he finds himself with no ground to stand upon. . He Is neither republican, democrat, populist, fuslonist or "citi zen" in this campaign- He is forced to run for oltice and he is bound by neith er pledge nor platform. a a And does anyone suppose that the "ring of three," which handled the whole democratic party of Clatsop county In the so-called "cltlxens" oiovcment, was Ignorant of the fact that the nominees of that hap-hazard, thumb-bumbled convention would be absolutely free from pledges or plat form? Not a bit of It They counted on being able. If they worked their men In, to go to them In public office and say "you can do" this or that because In doing It you violate no pledge to the people to be honest economical, alert and efficient, because you made no promises, took no pledges, and are bound by the platform of no party." Many a favor will be done should the nominees on the headless ticket be successful that would not have been granted by the same men If they had openly pledged their honor to carry on the county's business In an honest, economical manner. It Is the way the ticket was put up that makes the people suspicious of the hop-scotchers. If the democrats had been satisfied that everything was all right about the so-called "cltlxens" convention, they would have re-convened and Indorsed It. but they were not and they refused to sanction the actions of a body of men which the law aferwards declared was illegal, and so the hop-scotchers without a head or a place on the ballot, unpledged and un supported, "appear before the people hunting ofllce for the sake of office. a ' a Let the voters look at the republican ticket and think over what they know of the men running on it What one of them has ever been dishonest, neg ligent, inefficient, or unaccommodating In ortice? What one of them has ever done anything in private life that should call down upon him the cen sure of the citizens? Is not every nom inee a tried and trusted man In pri vate life, and nearly all of them tried and trusted in private and public life? What better ticket do you want? The county officials who are running for re-election have In two years paid $20,000 of the county's debt, besides over $41,000 Interest on the debt sad dled upon them by previous adminis trations. Where, then, is their extrav agance and waste? Head Judge Gray's statement. Has a single hop-scotcher dared deny it? Not one. It-is the plain truth. What more can you ask, taxpayers, of county officials than to do what the republicans have done? Be reasonable, sensible men. Leave your county affairs In safe hands; leave your national affairs In safe hands In the hands of the republican party. a a a ' As to the political outcasts, let them alone.
