Judge Gray's explanation of the country's financial condition merits the attention of taxpayers. It Is a com plete and convincing answer to the wanton and malicious "charges" of the democrats who are steering the "citizens" campaign. It is a state ment upon which Judge Gray chal lenges Investigation. Instead of run' nlng the county In debt, as these demo, crats would have It appear, the pres. ent administration has actually reduc ed the county's Indebtedness over $20,- 00o, besides paying nearly JU.OOO of Interest on the debt accumulated be fore It went Into oftlce. There can be no question as to the correctness of the showing, and any citizen can so satisfy himself by an examination of the statement In another column. The utter desperation and unscrupu lousness of the men behind the "clti ens" movement Is clearly demonstrat ed by this statement. It exposes a deliberate and premeditated purpose on the part of these men to defeat the republican ticket by willful fraud and Imposition on the people. Its effect will be disastrous on the "citizens" ticket. It is difficult to see how any man with a spark of honesty and truthfulness la ' his composition can endorse such campaign methods as Judge Gray's statement convicts the democrats of at the polls on Monday. The Astorian would like to say a few earnest words to the republicans on the subject of the legislative ticket As explained a few days ago there can be no objection raised to John Hahn on the score of his standing as a citizen and a business man. He is known to be honest, but headstrong and inde pendent. And there Is Just the rub with his candidacy for the legislature this time. Any other year John Hahn might be a good man to send to the legislature from Clatsop county. But the very virtue which would recom mend John Hahn In an off year Is a vice this time. Let the Astorian ex plain very briefly what It means. John Hahn has been Induced to become a candidate for the legislature on the theory that the republican party of Clatsop county deserves to be turned down. It Is not necessary to discuss the reasons, fancied or real, why this sertiment has found expression in John Hahn's nomination; suffice it Is to say that it exists and that the demo crats are moving heaven and earth to take ADVANTAGE of it. Now. or. dinarily, It should be enough for any republican to know that the democrats are favoring any local political com bination to justify his opposition to it. Especially ought this to be so In a year like this, when the combined forces of opposition to republican measures of public policy are making the most desperate battle In their his tory. The republican party has made wonderful gains In the affection of the people within the last four years. Its success In the administration of the affairs of the Nation has been un paralleled in human experience. It is a waste of time to attempt to explain why this Is so; every man, woman or child, of reasoning age, knows that It is true. If William McKinley is elect ed this year, and congress continues to be controlled by a republican major ity, both the democratic and populist parties, so far as their present alleged principles are concerned, will go to pieces. Neither will ever dare affirm In national or state platform the doc trines upon which they now profess to stand, any more than the democratic party dared to affirm after the civil war, which It fomented and encouraged by every means in its power, the here sies of negro slavery and state rights. Beaten this time, no more will ever be heard of the democratic and popu list parties, as those parties are now constituted and under their existing leadership. There is nothing, there fore, that a democratic or populist poli tician can do or promise that he will not undertake or pledge this year for the sake of defeating the republican party. It is their last stand, and they will make the most of It. Now, com ing back to John Hahn, the Astorian wants to say that by reason of the crisis that confronts the republican party, to send men of his stamp to the legislature this time is a dangerous experiment. To any reasoning and In telligent man the Astorian can prove this by an argument resistless and unanswerable. In doing this it will not, and need not, say one word against his character. In fact the very prin ciples for which he is supposed to stand, and which the Astorian would ordinarily be among the foremost to commend, prove his utter unfltness as a legislative candidate. The first qual ification; the overwhelming qualifica tion; almost the only qualitlcatlon, a candidate for the legislature in any state In the Union should possess to day and especially candidates for the legislature In Oregon Is unswerving, uncompromising, utter and unquestion ed fealty to republican measures and fidelity to the majority rule of the party In Its conventions and caucuses. No other republican, whatever his per sonal worth, his personal views or his opinions, is a safe man to put in the responsible office of state legislator. Now. let it be noted! IT 13 UPON HIS VERY OPPOSITION TO THESE PRINCIPLES THAT JOHN HAHN HAS BEEN NOMINATED AND IS BEING BOOMED FOR THE LEGIS LATURE. Out of some personal wh!m or opinion, IT MATTERS NOT WHAT since It Is an assertion of his Indi vidual views, contrary to the expressed will of the republican majority of Clat sop couaty. JOHN HAHN. still pro fesslng to be a republican, is seeking the overthrow of the REGULAR leg islative candidates of the REPUBLI CAN party for the legislature. That is to say, he asserts the right of his Individual opinion upon a matter of party policy against the MAJORITY opinion of the republican party. Now. what John Hahn has done In Clatsop county politics in Astoria, he will do in Oregon politics at Salem. He Is that kind of a man; it is because of Just such egotistical, revolutionary, unre strained and thick-headed tendency that THE DEMOCRATS COAXED HIM ON THE "CITIZENS" TICKET. AND ARE MAKING ALL KINDS OF TRADES ON COUNTY CANDIDATES TO SECURE HIS ELECTION. They know, if they can fill his mind with the Idea that he is greater than the re publican party at Salem, JUST AS THEY HAVE PERSUADED HIM HE IS IN ASTORIA, he will feel himself no mors bound by the republican caucus nomination for United States senator than he has considered himself bound by the republican majority nomina tions for legislative candidates in Clatsop county. It Is for these rea sons, the Astorian contends, that any republican who voles for John 'lahn violates the first principle of republican organization and exposes his party, his country and his state to a disaster which may be Irremediable. The best republican the only good republican in the situation that now confronts Oregon and the Nation is the republi can, regardless of what his other de flciencies may be, who stands first, last and all the time for his party rule and discipline, ABOVE ALL OTHER CON SIDERATIONS, PERSONAL, PRI VATE OR LOCAL. THE ISSUE PRESENTED. Salem Statesman. In three years and one month of the McKinley administration we have ex ported more agricultural products of the United States than in four years of Cleveland's administration, and we have exported over two hundred mil lions more of manufactured goods in three years and two months than In the full four years of Cleveland's adminis tration. There can be no mistaking the fact that und-?r the present era of comparative prosperity, with labor ers so generally employed, there has been a very much larger consumption of agricultural products than during the administration of Cleveland. There has been expansion at home and abroad, and there will be further ex pansion, under a republican adminis tration. Is there any voter In Oregon, upon carefully taking a view of the present situation, who would like to have it disturbed? No Oregon voter should think for a moment of casting a ballot for a can didate' for congress who will give aid and comfort to the opposition, or for a CANDIDATE FOR THE LEGISLA TURE WHOSE VOICE MIGHT HELP TO SEND A MAN TO THE UNITED STATES SENATE TO GIVE SUCH AID AND COMFORT. This Is the very time of all times in the history of this state when our people need every advantage gained, and every prospective advantage promised by a continuance of the present conditions. ELI PERKINS DOWN SOUTH. The other day. says the Louisville Commercial. Eli Perkins was Intro duced by Judge Scott, an old dyed-ln- the-wool Kentucky democrat. The ludge Is well known In the blue grass region, and the grand old Kentucklan has always been looked up to as a high priest of "befo' the wah democ racy." Perkins was Introduced by an old democrat, and Judge Scott supposed that Ell was a democrat, too, and he became confidential with him at once. "How are we democrats getting along Judge?" asked Eli In a confidential tone. The judge looked at Ell for a moment to see if he really wanted Information about the party, and slowly remarked: "Well, sir, we are getting on very well financially, but politically we are running behind; yes, I'm afraid we are running behind." "What causes this?" asked Ell. "Well, sir." said the Judge, sadly, "I am afraid our party has not been al together right We have erred In some thing." "Where have we erred. Judge?" "Well, sir, I hate to admit It, but our Grover Cleveland policy hurt us Ken tuckians. I wouldn't say it to a black republican, but we democrats all ad mit it among ourselves. You see," said the Judge, "we used to get 35 cents for wool, and a big price for hemp and tobacco before Grover came In, but that Wilson bill hurt us. It knocked wool down to 12 cents. Free Jute, put in to help the cotton fellows, ruined our hemp, and It rotted In the ground. Then we lowered the tariff on tobacco and our tobacco went down on us. We didn't complain, but we democrats did a good deal of thinking. Cattle and hogs got lower and lower, and whenj Grover went out we were pretty poor; yes, dog-on hardup, sir." "Are they still bad the times?" asked Eli. "No, honestly, the times are good. Wool and hemp and tobacco have doubled in price and are still going up, Cattle and hogs are high and our blue grass farmers are getting rich." "Well, what is the matter, then?' "Why, these good times have knocked out our dear old democratic party. Our democratic farmers say that they will never vote for free trade or low tariff again." "Well, what can we democrats do?' asked Ell. "I hate to admit It," said the Judge sadly, "but If we democrats want to win again we've got to keep the tariff right where it is. That old Wilson bill and Bryan's free silver will be a scare crow to every farmer In Kentucky and Tennessee. We've tried low tariff and we know I'm ashamed to say so, but we know It hurt us! No, sir, the people are prosperous, but 'our democratic party Is doing poorly. I wouldn't say it to a black republican, but that is the way we democrats talk among our selves." As the judge got off the train at Lex. ington he remarked: "Yes, and there was another mistake we democrats made. Grover Cleveland wanted to sink the republic of Hawaii and put a nigger on the throne. We democrats didn't complain, but it made us sick, for, between you and me, we democrats ain't puttin' niggers on thrones.
