Joseph Huchel, a fifteen-year-old As- torlu boy, la a hero on the West Slle. lie was visiting friends In the local ity and was hunting over tbe Adair farm. In crossing a field the lad saw a maddened bull In the act of goring to death an employe of the farmer nam ed Preston. The bull had chased Pres ton, caught and tossed him and, aa he fell to thu ground helpless, started to gore him. Young Huchel. w(th rare presence of mind for a boy so young, raised his rllle and, aiming at a spot just behind the bull's foreleg sent a bullet through the animal's heart and saved Preston- life, "They always told me to shoot a oVer that way," said Huchel, "uud I thought what would kill a deer would kill a bull, and I tried It." Preston Is glud he did. It has been suggested that the cham ber of commerce, push club and other commercial organizations of the city give to the visiting delegates of the grand lodgrf of Odd Fello-va of Oregon an entertainment of a public nature. Whether this should take the form of a banquet, during which the visitors and our own representative rltlscns will bo abl'i to expriMs their vI-.hvs con cerning Astoria, or whether It shall be a mass meeting of the cltliens to which the delegates will be Invited, Is undecided. Certain It Is that some pub lic recognition shoulj be given the Odd Fellows who will attend the grand lodge. They come from every county In the state of Oregon, and the good or bud opinions of Astoria they will carry home with th?m will depend lurgely upon how much they learn about our city and Us resources during their sojourn here. The resident Odd Fellows seem unac .'ountably lukewarm In arranging for the grand lodge meet ing they struggled so hard to get. With a little effort on their part, num erous enjoyable excursions could be arranged to points of in terest adjacent to Astoria without much trouble or cost. While It is Quite true thnt the grand lodge of Odd Fel lows will have a considerable amount of Important business to transact, still tha old axiom of "all work and no play mukes Jack a dull boy," will be found to be held true by most of the visitors. A few short excursions with at least on public reception will make the Odd Fellows' gnnd lodge meet ing of 1900 one of pleasant remem brance. Despite the fact that It has been announced that accommodations havo been secured for all ihe delegates who aro expjeted to be In attendance upon the grand lodge, J. V. Welch, chairman of the reception committee, states that tho number of available rooms, as far as reported, Is still far short of the requirements. He has, therefore requested that all those who are In a position to supply accommo dations of this nature notify him of the fact without delay, as he Is keep ing a register upon which all entries will be made. MAYOR WILL CALL ' SPECIAL MEETING -. i Council to Once More Consider, Public Lighting Question. ; i , . r , i ' I Water CommUsloa Will Re Aakcd to Parlitl-1 pile la lb Proceeding. Clllieai Will Wilt Ihe Oulieme tei J4ge i lb Mca Aaordlajfly, ! "I am glong to call a special meet-; Ing of the council before the explra-', Una of the street lighting contract,", autd Mayor Hergman, "and the water, commission can meet with them, If It ' desire. While I have no opinion to express regarding the lighting que-1 lion, other than to say I would be very j sorry to see the streets in darkness. I quite agree with you that the light- j Ing question should be settled at once." j There Is more In this coming spec-1 lal meeting of the council than ap- j pear on Ihe urfee. The owner and agents of the West Bhoro Mill Com pany have not given up all hope of continuing their hold on the public treasury. The emissaries of the corn- puny have been working night and j day, trying to atem the tide of public ! opinion. In the hope that the West I Shore Mill Company will be able at, tho coming special meeting of the! council to bully, coax or bamboozle the j majority of the touncllmen who threw j out their bid. Into accepting some sort ! of a compromise that will allow them to continue to rob the taxpayer upon their own terms, "stand and deliver." l ut lh Weat Fhore Mills Company Is not going to be al.le to either bull-J lore or fool the council. 1 lie citizens f AstorU are wld.'-uwako on Ihe llphtln,' proposition and they have made it cleir to their representatives In the municipal legislative body that they not only approve of the stand the council has taken In regard to the West tihorj Mills Company bid, but that they expect them to go ahead and ferevi-r release the city of Astoria from the choking throttle of that grasping and qre-Mly corporation- The council can be depended upon to do It duty. The men who voted against the West Shore Mills Company to drive them from the city's treas ury, did not act on the spur of the moment, nor will they stultify them selv. by going back upon the decided stand they have taken because of the bogle of dark streets for a week or two, perhaps, which Is the only ar gument that has or can be made In ob jection to their action In refusing to allow the city to be longer robbed. But it la not what the council will do that the citlzena are anxious about. It Is what the water commission will do, or will not do, that concerns them. If, when the special meeting of the council Is called, the members of the water commission fall to meet with that body and declare themselves upon the public lighting question, then the cltlxens will have reason to believe that the power of the West Shore Mills Company extends further than It has ever been Imagined ven by that com pany'a most active opponents, and Its real enemies are not a few. The special meeting of the council vlll teat the metal and the manhood of the public servant of Astoria. It will how whether the men elected or ap pointed to serve the people, to watch over their Interest, to strive for the upbuilding of the city, are honest men, faithful to their trust, loyal to the peo ple, or whether they are the tool of a monopoly, and If they prove them- selvea to be renegades and tools, the rtasjn for their attitude on the great public question will not be hard to guess. The people want the atreet lighted; they want more and better light In their factories, stores and dwellings, hut they will no longer submit to ex tortion, either as taxpayers or Individ uals. They know that the water com mission and city council have It in their power to relieve them from the extortions Imposed and practiced by the West Shore Mills Company and if the water commission doe not aid the council and exercise the power It possesses, the people will know the rea son why. This Is no time for coaxing and com promising matters. The issue is cearly cut. There are but two aides to the question and the people's servants are now called upon to take one side or the other, for or against the people. 6TORM AND SICKNESS. SPECIAL SALE DAYS Tuesday and Wednesday OF EACH WEEK Works, Trescott" Packing Company and other consignees, arrived In port orriHV after a roush voyage. In fact Captain Ree say it was the worst voyage in ht experience and he has been over a quarter of a century at aea. No ship were spoken on the voyage. Three days out from port, Emln Peter sen, able seaman, went Insane and Jumped overboard and waa lost. Hard ly had the crew recovered from the shock of Petersen' suicide, when an other sailor, John Eaton, collapsed and died with inflamatlon of the stomach and waa burled at iea. Then a sailor named Atkinson was attacked with pneumonia and had to be put to bed, where he remained dur ing the voyage. The sailor is dying with hasty consumption. He will prob ably be put in the hospital here. The next sailor to fall ill was Al fred Jensen, who waa attacked with dysentery and had to go to bed. The last of the crew to go on tbe sick or mlsBlng list was Charles CUappel, an apprentice, who broke hi arm, and then the chapter of accidjnta closed. Alt this time, with a steadily decreas ing crew, Captain Rees waa working hi ship towards port and be was a happy man when the anchor waa drop ped in the harbor yesterday. The ship had but one passenger on board- .SEASIDE NOT TO BLAME. Portland Excursionist Came Without Warning Warm Welcome Awaits the Republicans. "When the republicans come down to see us next Monday night, they will llnd the Seaside people ready to receive them, and fully able and more than willing to give them a good time," said J. H. Johannsen, of that place, last night. "I may say that the re publicans of Seaside feel proud over the fact that the republican candidates selected our town as the place for their opening rally. But we deserve It, on all accounts," continued Mr. Johann sen. ' for Seaside precinct Is one of the banner republican districts of the county and we will roll up the same old majority for tha ticket, legisla tive, county and, later on, the nation al ticket, that we have heretofore given. "By the bye. I want to say a word in regard to soma of the criticisms pub lished about the treatment of the ex cursionists who came down to Sea side on the Red Men's excursion a week ago. In the first place we people at Seaside did not know whether there waa one hundred or one thous and people coming. "The clam bake was a fizzle. It was worse -than a fraud but again Seaside was not to blame. A man and woman from Portland, hired by the Red Men. had the clam-bake in charge. They brought their clams with them and, I understand, the clams were natives of Puget sound, so they could not have been extra fresh. ''But to show you how the Seaside people tried to emedy the error not of their making, I will state what our people did. Every merchant handling groceries In the town opened hi store and turned it Into a restaurant Pri vate families furnished food, one fam ily that I know of, feeding no less than seventy-flve people.
