According to steamboat men yester day a one of the moat disagreeable days ever experienced on the river. There have been clays In the paat few years when the waves were higher and the water' rougher than on yesterday but there have been few of them where the wind and wave combined made It an hard to .leer a steamer. ' Thomas Kelly, a Thief, Finds One to Escape Through, Tho "loopholes of the law" are not myths. They exist, If you only know how to find them. Thomas Kelly found one yesterduy or he would today be commencing a term of deserved Imprisonment. The peculiar thing about It la that Kelly's "loophole of the law" seems to have been one of tho made to order brand. On Thursduy af'crnoon Tlioma. Kelly and J. R. Van Bibber arrived on the steamer from Stella. Kelly travelled "light," but Van Bibber hod a chest of tool, of considerable value, probably $100. Acordlng to Van Bib ber's story he "fell In" with Kelly on the boat and they agreed to stop together when they got to Astoria. Upon the arrival of the steamer Van Bibber left his tool chest In the ware house on the dock and he and Kelly went up town together. Kelly soon contrived to lose his new found friend and hurrying back to the dock, claimed Van Bibber's tool chest, had It hauled up town and sold It to a second-hand dealer for $10. Sometime after becoming separated from Kelly, Van Bibber concluded to hnve his tool chest brought up town and went to the, wharf after It only to find It gone. From the description of the man who had claimed the chest and tnken It away, Van Hlbber eas ily recognized Kelly as the thief and ho hurried away to tho police. In lcs9 than twenty minutes nfter the robbery was reported, the police had Kelly In custody. He was found In a saloon, where he was rapidly exchang ing his Ill-gotten gains for whiskey. In fact he had managed to ppend some U In the brief time ho had been In funds. ( New comes the "loophole.", Van Bibber recovered his tool chest, which the second-hand dealer readily sur rendered when ho found It had been stolen. Later the second-hand dealer received from lorae of Kelly's friends the $10 he had given the thief for the chest. Then both the second-hand dealer and Van Bibber announced that they did not want to prosecute Kelly and the latter, admitting the theft, asked to be released from custody be cause the prosecuting witnesses for the state did not want to testify against hl.m Kelly waa released yesterday after noon, i CLATSOP COUNTY'S WINNING TICKET To Be Selected by Republican Convention Today. The town was full of republican, and the air churged with politics last night. One of the dele gates who participated In the meeting expressed the con-Muslin arrived at very brleily when he said: "The meeting adjourned with every one fully satisfied that there was not the allghtest ground upon which to base even the suspicion that the lead era In Astoria would endeavor to put up a stale or that thy Intended to engine- r matte rs In the convention to the Injury of the Interests of the party and the county outside Astoria. Our call arranges for a meeting to be held again tomorrow morning Just before the opening of the convention, but I am satisfied that the meeting will be poorly attended and nothing come of It." At the conclusion of the caucus last right the country delegates attended the "smoker," given by the Toung Men's Republican Club, In a body. There Is no certainty as to the ticket which the convention will nominate today, but from the expressed opinions of the delegates generally the forecast given below may be" risked with a great degree of safety. The opinion Is freely expressed among the delegates that the present county officers have given the people an ex cellent administration, and that they thould be re-nominated. It Is doubt ful If there will be an open contest be fore the convention against any of the present Incumbents. The Astorlan, however, feels It reajo;i.f!y safe to predict the following nominations: Llnville for sheriff, Wherlty for clerk, Carnahan for assessor. Thomp son for treasurer, Lc-e for superinten dent of schools and F. R. Stokes and ohun Young for the legislature. The nomination of a commissioner to succeed Howell Lewis is too much of an uncertainty to risk a prediction. There ore several candidates In the field and it Is Impossible to draw any conclusion whatever as to who will come up strongest before the conven tion. Howell Lewis, the present In cimbent, and Dan .'. Ingall. of Lewis and Clark appear to be dividing the sentiment of the delegate, pretty evenly but neither one has the slight est cause to feel that he has a "nm.h," as the name, of a n'iiuber if other very strong men were quite gen erally dlscUHFtd last night Indeed, "dark horses" were bobbing up con tinually. There Is no doubt that Mr. l.culb wll' encountci tome opposition among the country delegates, owing to the action he took on the "three roads" proposition, but this loss may be offset by the support of delegates who approve his action. The nomination of F. It. Stokes and Johan Young for the ' legislature seems to be generally conceded, The names of several' prominent members of the party have been sug gested In connection with the chair manship, but the opinion prevails that Juuite Vnjior will be ;h ten. There Is every indication that today's convention will be one of the most l.v. n.onlous In the hUtory cf the parly In Clatsop county. A spirit of royal good will pre alls among the .b I, irnlc and now that the recent Intimations that a slate was to be put up have been proved to be groundless and ab surd, today's convention is bound to bo one of the most open and satis factory ever held In the county. SMOKED TIPE OF HARMONY. Young Republicans' Reception Troves a Great Success. The smoker given by the Young Men's Republican Club at Fisher's hall last night was one of the most success ful entertainments of Its kind ever held In Astoria. City and county republicans, to the number of over 300, mingled together and talked politics, and "speakers of tho evening" talked politics, but the pipe of peace was passed early and hence the discussions were confined to as broad and as emtio a field as ever William Jennings Bryan attempted to cover in a speech, and that's saying a whole lot. The committee to whom the "smok er," with all it. manifold arrange ments, was Intrusted consisted of D. A. McLean, Andrew Dalgity, George Welc h, A. C. Cuilon and J. M. Young and the club surely owes these gen tlemen a vote of thank, although the contemplation of the result of their effort should have been sufficient re ward. No attempt wa made to decorate the hall but an attractive feature was the life-sized portrait of ('resident McKlnley which graced the back ground of the speaker' stand. Long-stem clay pipes and plenty of U.buoco, with cloud of smoke In It, had been provided but nothing else In the way of refreshment or luxur ies. The question of furnishing some thing to eat and drink, a well aa to smok j, was discussed by the committee who decided, from past experiences, to make the entertainment Just what Its name Implied, a smoker. And, be it said to the credit of the committee, their foresight proved to be con densed wbtdom. C. T. Crosby, president of the club, acted a master of ceremonies, assist ed by Secretary J. M. Young. The program of the entertainment was announced at s o'clock "amidst no smoking." The Columbia orchestra rendered an overture and then Prof. John McCue wa Introduced and dellv ered the addres on behalf of the club. Always eloquent Prof. McCue left nothing to be desired In the cordiality of hi welcome to the visitor. HI remark were well received. Then came the order to "smoke uo." and to music by the orchestra the large audience gradually disappeared in a fragrant hate of sun-cured old Virginia. A dialect recitation, replete with lo cal political hits, by Fred Johnson, earned merited applause. Following several selection by Prof. Seines: string orchestra, a short address was delivered by HarriBon AJIen. A tenor solo by Charles Burgland, a recitation by T. A. McKean and selections by the string orchestra came next in order and then the program proper was clos ed with an addres by C. W. Fulton. Everybody talked to everybody else, after the exercises, for an hour and the majority kept their "clays" going as If they were delegates to a tobacco parliament Instead of a young repub lican gathering. Finally the visitors felt their way out and the "smoker" went out, to be relighted with a fresh pipefull In the near future. OVERTURNED HIS BOAT. Andrew Hansen Saves His Life but Loses His Produce. Andrew Hansen, a Gray's river rancher, had a rough experience on the river oft Booth's cannery yesterday. 11 was on his way to this city in a fishing boat with a load of farm pro ducts and when Just off the cannery a squall struck him. The boat capsised but Hansen managed to cling to the upturned craft, no easy task, since the boat lightened by Its load having gone to the bottom of the river, was pitched and tossed about by the waves In a terrible manner. Fortunately some boatmen on shore witnessed the acci dent and manning a boat went to Han sen's rescue. They took the man oft In safety and towed his boat to shore. Beyond a severe chill, due to his wet ting, Hunsen was none the worse for the accident In health but was Injured in pocket considerably by the loss of his produce. AGREED UPON A VERDICT. Jury in Pen til ia Damage Suit Reached Decision Early This Morning. At 2.15 this morning the Jury In the case of John Pentilla against the Oat sop Mill Company arrived at a verdict and delivered It under seal to Deputy Sheriff Trulllnger who was In charge as acting bailiff. The Jury waa out exactly four and one halt hours. The action of the Jurors In determ ining the amount of damages, if any, will not be made public until Monday next, as Judge McBride left this morn ing tor St. Helens to hold court and cannot return before that time. The suit was brought to recover damages sustained by Pentilla through the loss of his right arm while at work at the mill In January. The accident occurred through the breaking of the cut-off saw which Pentilla was operat ing at the time. Pentilla alleged that the saw was defective and attributed the accident to this cause. The de fendants, on the other hand, contend ed that the saw was broken by a large timber being forced against it and that Pentilla, had he not been careless, would not have been Injured. The cose continued for several days, nearly the entire time yesterday be ing taken up by the attorneys In their arguments to the Jury. It Is exceedingly doubtful that Pen tilla will recover the entire amount prayed for-$20.000, but that the Jur ors felt that he was entitled to some thing seems a reasonable conclusion in view of the length of time occupied In their deliberations before an ar rangement was reached. ' "AUSTRIAN GEORGE" DEAD. John Catalonish, known all along the Columbia aa "Austrian George," a pi oneer fisherman on the river, died ear ly yesterday morning at the hospital of cancer of the liver. He will be bur led today In the county cemetery. The history of "Austrian George's" later lift.
