H, It., of any consequence, ofe.irr.-d last Saturday night a mile be low I'lii'loii and near tha t-cene of the big Mule of a year ag). A mass of earth from ten to twenty feet in length, covering the track for a distance of neurly a hundred feet, was what confronted the gaze of a number of passing, ra and train ham ! It would be very helpful in the build on the up train Sunday morning, which J ing It did not seem to Justify the ex- ai rived at the aeene of the slide at 9' o'clock, having b.-.-n stopped a short distant e from there by torpedoes being, plated on the track to sound the warn log. A large f,roe of section hands were already engaged In forcing the track, Ir. close proximity to the fallen earth, from Its original roadbed in order to i In mount the burled section. This woik being completed the tw o ends of j track were hastily joined together by extra rails, and the train slowly pro ceided over this temporary structure. All went well until the ponderous en gine Mruck a seition of the track that hid for Its foundation a bed of nice, soft, Oregon mud, when thereupon the two front driven heels of the engine left the traik, and the faces of the al ready belated passengers fell as flat an the "three-mads" proposition. The placing of the engine back on the track consumed but a short time, however, but In order to brace It sulllclentty to sustain the immense weight of the engine, necessitated another hour's delay. This being completed, tiie train I roceeded on Its way without further Incident, passing the down train near ( lilt in, and arriving In Portland at 4:l"i. just five hours behind her sched uled time, the down train arriving In this city at about the same time. This particular section of the road has been a constant source of trouble ever since Its completion, slides occur ring and recurring during the rainy season. The entire hill side In this section Is completely undermined by water and seamed and cracked through and through. There being no solidity about the char acter of the soil in the vicinity, it naturally slides of Its own weight across lie track of the A. & C. R. R. PUULIC LIURARY REPORT. Annual Statement Made by the Presi dent. The officers of the Astoria Public Library have made the following re port: Report of the president' and secre tary of the Astoria Public Library for the year ending February 1, 1900. In studying the progress or retro gression made by the library during the past year, we must take into ac count the condition of affairs In the on every street even though our city- town and country In which H Is situ ated. It seems unnecessary to speak of the tales of hard times to be heard o never street, ven though ou city- hy-the-aeM, has auch prmnlipj of great ness In Its future, The effect that this has had upon the finances of the II brsry will be shown by the following report. We have felt the reduction of $5 In thu monthly allowance from the city during the year. Kxactly how this happened I suppoae we will never know, but during the laat legislative assembly ,when the Astoria charter wa amended, one ordinance read that a sum not exceeding $13 a month was to Ire alolwed the Aatorla Public LI Ijtary. Home one, not no much Interest ed In the subject as we are, changed It to r-nd not more than $-' a month and in this way It waa made a law. This wlli n comitate some mavement of th will iH.ccaaltate some movement being made before the next legislature con-v'-nca to see If thla sum can not be ralnd to one In arwrdancc with the oiifci.iat ordinance. j The finance committee outlined four etit. riuinri cnta for the year, of which three have been given and the fourth In being prepared. The kindness of nhnda of the library In offering this frli-n la ot the library In offering their h n.e for the benefit of the library has be n fully appreciated by the boards although we have accepted but one in vluticn this yiar outside of the menL.-r of the library, that of Mra. J. H. llitglns. Whin we turn from these things that have been done In the past , to the ', mk necessary tor future growtn, we aie reminded that we cannot rest on our laurels but must make as earnest an endeavor the coming year that the library may be more efficient In every vav and vleld ait Jnfluence for good ir. this city. Then- is one improvement I think especially needed In this work. Of course, theri are several things we will require, for Instance, more book-cases, nmre room for filing away the papers that accumulate so rapidly and per haps one more magazine table would be convenient, but more than all these wi. need an up-to-date catalogue. Up- to-Cate in the sense of Including the latest book purchased by or donated I to the library. We have Investlga- large'tne 'avd catalogue system, buf wune jt-nse. We need an appendix to the present catalogue and I think it would be ot enough service to the subscrib era to niut?rlalry Increase the use er the ciiculutino library.
