The Astorian guarantees to Its ad vertisers the largest circulation of any newspaper published on the Columbia river. Advertising rates can be had on ap plication to the business manager. The On-Ronian's scathing rebuke of Concressiran Tonjrue ' frivolity in pro posing a mardl gras exhibition at gov ernment expense in Portland when the state is rapidly tending to commercial decay through ignorance or inatten tion of the Washington delegation to needed Improvements of the Columbia river, ill be endorsed and applauded wherever the truth of Oregon's present situation is realised and mourned. Tongue's nonsensical suggestion ts in keeping with other manifestations of the spirit In Oregon which wastes time and money on frolics while other states by Industry and thrift are grow ing great in commerce and trade. There may be excuse for Governor Getr's suings around the state in the pursuit of happy-go-lucky entertain ment, lot he has probably never read and docs not deem it his duty to study the statistics relating to the growth and development of his Elate, but Tongue is in a different atmosphere and surrounded with examples of other bustling public men who understand and attend to the wants of their com munities even before they are appre ciated at home. There Is every induce ment and convenience for Tongue's ap plication to these problems of commer cial expansion, and he has access to sources of information and Inspiration cf which Governor Geer has pt-rhaps never even heard. The Oregonian, how ever, is not free from blame for the state if unconcern and utter indlffer ence which prevails among some of those who are considered among the brightest and most enterprising bust ness men of the state. That paper has pursued the mistaken policy of sup pressing the details as to Oregon's de eadtnee and has lulled the fears of many of Its readers by roseate pictures of the state's standing in particular line of commerce, where there was no competition, and with boastful predic urong ones In speaking about Scott's Emulsion for children, you should not forget that it con tains lime and soda, just what the child must have to form strong bones and good teeth. It's this forming time I you want to look after. Growing bodies must have an easily digested tat Just think how much of it there is in milk, as cream. Sccii's Emulsion b even more easily digested than cream. It's surprising how chil dren thrive when given H. Don't keep the children living on the edge of tkXntu aO the time. Make them strong and rugged, plump and hearty. Scotfi Emul sion of Cod-liver Oil and the Hypo phosphites of Lime and Soda will do litis for them. At all imrrirtt ; toe and f i .00. The publication in the Ore gonian of the plain, unvarnished truth of Oregon s position in comparison with California and Washington would do more good In stirring up Oregon's people, both business men and politi cians, than columns of post mortem criticism on the Incapacity of such public representatives as McBride and Tongue, as sensible and much deserved as its comments on their weakness and inedciency have been. OUR WORLD MARKET. When the United States is furnishing steel rails to the tune of 200,000 tons, tor roads building In Australia, It is no wond-r that the mills should be busy and prices good. It Is to be remem bered that up to a few years ago all the rails used in Australia were made in England, but the world has moved since then, and it has moved parttcu larly fast as concerns the United States. But it is not in Australia alone that we are sending rails. Japan is calling upon us for the same kind of material, and so are China and Egypt. The great trans-Siberian railroad, connecting St. Petersburg with Port Arthur, Is using Uncle Sam's steel, and with great sat' iffaction. Now that the superiority of our product has been thoroughly es tablished, and the Inviting character of the prices we are able to offer has become fully known, the foreign mar ket open to our manufactures Is al most unlimited. It is quite natural that Americans Hhould crow loudly and long over the steel rail situation, as well as our enor mous exports In other lines of gods. The situation if a complete vindication of our economic policy, and a refuta tion of the prophecies of the enemies of that policy. May the good work go on. May the steel rails, and the print ing pret-ses, and the typewriters made in free America have some occult In fluence in the interest of freedom with those who use these products when they reach their purchasers across the sea.
