Even many gold democrats would undoubtedly accept William Jennings Bry;in as a presidential candidate If they believed that bffore and after election he would be silent and Inac tive on his silver views, but Mr. Bryan Is one of the mast consistent and per sistent mono-metalitts In the world. He has no more idea of giving up his IS to 1 craze than he has of giving up his breath. With it as a leading fea ture of the democratic platform he now proposes some new planks that are, almost as certain to divide his party as the f.nanclal question. Unless the gold democrats should support McKlnley directly for re-election, there will certainly be three, if not more, presidential tickets In the field. It does not require much of a mathema tician to estimate the result. The re publican party will be solid, with gains from ull the doubtful, and the vote for aii the othr candidates will be Oadly divided. EJWi. 1 . J There is now a stronger sentiment throughout the country than ever be fore In favor of the election of senators by direct vote of the people. The re cent legislative deadlocks, the at tempt to get the senate to seat Colonel Quay on a certificate of appointment by Governor Stone of Pennsylvania, and the scandal growing out of the Clark case in Montana, have all help ed to develop a feeling that it Is Ume to change the method of electing sen ators. So strong has this sentiment become that a bill has been 'avoralily reported to congress providing for the election of senators by the people. The bill leaves It discretionary with the legislatures of the several .nates to provide for the election of senators by popular vote. It Is not to be expected that the senate will favor any such measure, but there Is a greater tenden cy even in that body toward such radi cal action than there has -cver been before. For the calendar year 18W American exports of domestic merchandise were within S3 1,485 of equalling those of Great Hrltain. The total value of Great Britain's domestic exports was 11,287,971,009, while those of the United States were worth 11,212,484,000. Clinton A Jack on sts CHICAGO, lii roc Bale by Cfearlsa Kwn Dnicpst. Ortaoa. the previous year our exports exceed ed those of Great Britain by almost one hundred million dollars, but at thru time our exports were twenty millions smaller than for the year JS99. In the race for supremacy In the world's export trade, the United States has been making wonderful strides. This is made evident by th comparison of 1S75 with last year. In 1S"5 our total was only J497,;63,737 while those of Great Britain were $1. 6S7,497,0(V, an excet-s over those of the United States of J5J0.23S,000. Tet In that quarter century, that Is, from 1S73 to 1S90, the exports of the United States have increased cne hun dred and fifty-two jvr cent, while those of Great Britain have in creased only nineteen )er rent, know ing how remarkable has been the growth of the r.erican export trade. It Is also interesting to study the fig ures of imports for the two periods, 1S75 and 1S99. In 1S75 the United States imported $503,132,935 worth of foreign gjods and Great Britain irn-1 Iorted foreign goods worth $1,319,779, 000. In 1599 the value of American im portation of foreign commodities was 1799,534.620, an increase of a little less than three hundred millions, while ureal iirltain s ln-poris of foreign goods were valued at 13,360,620,000, an increase or over bi'linn I jII.im. It is fom.d by a comparison of import fig ures with those of exports for the quar ter 0: a century under considera- uim mai me inueu states had an excess of exports ever year save 1SS8 and that Great Britain 1 Importations exceeded her exportation 'or ev ry vear ir. the period. In 1S75 our excess of exports over imports was but Vr 7H4S6, and In 1899 it Val risen n J475,- 032,021, while on the other hand Great Britain's Imports exceeded her exports in oy 1449,314,000 and In 1M9 by $756,23J,313. - Dunr.g the quarter ..-en- tury tne exports, of the Vnlied States exceeded In value our Imports by the enormous sum of $$,970,564,000, while the excess of in.pmH into Great Brit ain during the same p' i'Idd aggregat ed the far greater sum of $J4,4J.3.09I.W9.
