I thought your sisters beautiful, .Both May and April, too; But April she had tearful eyes, And May had eyes of blue. And June, I liked the singing , Of her birds, and liked her smile, But all her songs were promises Of something afterwhlle. 1 And July's face, the lights and shades That may not oft beguile, With recollections o'er the wheat, The dreamer at the stile. BEGINNING TO REALIZE VALUE OF TOURISTS The fact that Ashland is waking up to the advantages to be derived from entertaining the tourists who dally pass thru here and camp in the local auto-park is being realized not only by business men and citl tens of this city, but by our neigh bors in adjacent towns, who are also making an effort to entertain the stranger In their midst. Thb Rose hurg Review makes 'the following comment On what tourists are doing for the country: According to recent reports, Gln- dale, Grants Pass, Medford and Ash land are spending small sums of money In taking care, of the tourists and working at. the tourist camp grounds. This is also being done In Eugene, Albany and Salem. Nearly all of these camp grounds are said to be provided with wood for the tourist or there are a number of gas heaters or electric stoves, with met ers, In which the tourist may deposit cents and thus secure heat for several hours for cooking. In a re. cent Interview with merch'atats of the southern cities, tne lowest est! mate made as to the value of tour. to a town was $5 per car per day. The average estimate as made by merchants was $10 to $12 per day. "We have only two electric stoves In our local camp grounds and this Is considered not rtear enough We have no wood. The merchants of Roseburg have rented two pieces of land for the grounds, and had elec tric lights put In. Water has also been supplied. More accommoda tions are now needed. Tables should 1 built on the Card wort side and some benches are also needed there. One or two more tables arte necc.i- SB.ry on (lie Wiuiborly side," says Mr. Hetnllne. Ho esks: ''Is It not possible to secure from our city council th sum of $300 to be used in Improving these grounds? In one city I found three families of tourists who had remained there 'i wieek looking 'the country over. They were so tmpi-esKd wjlh (tlio nice camp ground nnd the environment, that two of them remained Jon? nought to become resident They purchased property. ' : "We can do the same thing If w only wake up and get In the swim, and take advantage of evry oppor tunity. We need two cords of slab wood cut In 16 Inch lengths. One cord on each side of the grounds. Ve Seed a half dozen gas or electric stoves and water. Put In these con veniences and the tourist that Is con stantly knocking at our door and begging Information of our Chamber of Commerce will remain long enough to enjoy our climate, and poBsllily .become residents anions us." MEN ARRESTED FOR LEAVING CAMP FIRE William Bunch, Roy Dysert, Joe Dyrfert, all of Kerby, Oregon, failed to completely extinguish their camp fire at Dead Horse Camp at the head of Sucker Creek, Thursday, July 24, and, as a result, were arrested, tried and fined $3.00 and costs, July 2S, at JubUco Dolman's court. Theso men had been camped ut Dead Horse Camp ground, and on Thursday, at about 7 o'clock broke camp and moved to another camp a mile or two away. Before leaving they, as they thought, extinguished their camp fire. However, a iasrfrby, tabout S o'clock, discovered the fire st!!l hu-nlng, and reported it to Her man Lucthye, lookout man on Bolan Mountain, at 6:30. Mr. Liftthye, under Instructions of District Rang er M. M, Lewis, went to the fire, put It out, and overtook Mr. Bunch, and Messrs. Roy and Joe Dysert, who admitted having camped th'ere. On Monday, July 28, they were brought before Justice of the Peace Holman at Grants Pass, on chargo of violating Section 9 of the Oregon State Klre Law. They plead guilty, and were fined $3.00 and costs, tbo jnlnlmum lne being Impeded by Justice Holman lcauo they had made considerable effon to extin guish their fire with water, and had presumed that it was out. The District Forester has Issued positive instructions that every of fender against either th Stare or Federal fire laws must be prosecut ed, no matter how extenuating the circumstances or the offence may have been. Carelessness with fire in the woods is responsible for n vast amount of damage to the prin ciple resource of Oregon standing timber; and carelessness with fire In the woods la no more excusable than carel-ssiless with fire In one's own house, ASHLAND TIDINGS SAILS satis NON-DUPLICATE.
