Roads fine. The next day over llayden Hill that was very steep and rocky going down for two and a half miles. Mere I1 passed an old mine where Immense work had been done years ago. Throwing everything in the car, I here made the first real night drive, down a steep, crooked grade three miles long, and camped tn town at 11:30. After resting five days I took my daughter-in-law and her two children to Lakeview.. After spending a week there, went to Bend.. From here north to The Dalles wheat and other crops are very fine, but the roads are mostly fierce to the end of the Co lumbia Highway, which is fifty-eight miles west of The Dalles, but the road and scenery on the constructed high way Is simply beyond the power of description. I doubt If there Is any thing to compare with it In the world. This brings me to Gaston, where my oldest boii is In business, thirty-one miles west of Portland. After three days' rest I was on my way homeward bound Ashland the beautiful In a little over two days, getting here Thursday, the 27th of July. He would tell his driver that he feels the heat on a very warm day quite as much as if he could read a thermometer. f He would say: "Give me a little water many times a day, when the heat is intense, but not much at a time it I am warm; If you want me to keep well don't water me too soon after I have eaten." He would say:- "When the sun is hot and I am working let me breathe once in a while In the shade of some house or tree; if you have to leave me on the street, leave me In the shade if possible. Anything upon my head, between my ears, to keep off the sun is bad for me If the air can not circulate freely underneath it." He would talk of Bllppery streets, and the sensations of falling on cruel city cobblestones the pressure of the load pushing him to the fall, the bruised knees and wrenched joints, and the feel of the driver's lash. He would tell of the luxury of a fly net when at work and of a fly blanket when standing still In fly sea son, and of the bon to him of screens In the stable to keep out the Insects that bite and sting. He would plead for as cool and com fortable a stable as possible In which to rest at night after a day's work under the hot sun.
