Ashlari Company
Takes Federal Oath
About twenty members of the Ash
land company of the Coast Artillery
Corps took the federal oath Monday,
Forty-five member stook the oath 'a
week ago Saturday, ten last Monday
The Ashland company is now part of
the federal system, the taking of the
oath being necessary so that the men
may benefit by the federal pay for
militia. The Ashland company
now about seventy-five strong.
The oath of the officers under the
new regime is as follows:
"I do solemnly swear that I will
support and defend the constitution
of the United States and the consti
tution of the state of Oregon against
all enemies, foreign and domestic;
that I will obey the orders of the
president of the United States and
the governor of the state of Oregon;
that I make this oath freely, without
any mental reservations or purpose
of evasion, and that I will faithfully
discharge the duties of the national
guard of the United States and state
of Oregon upon which I am about to
enter."
The oath of the enlisted men Is dif
ferent and follows:
I do hereby acknowledge to have
enlisted this 30th day of June, 1916,
as a soldier in the service of the
United States and of the state of Ore
gon for the period of three years In
service and three years in reserve
under the conditions prescribed by
law, unless sooner discharged by the
proper authorities, and I also solemn
ly swear that I will bear true and
faithful allegiance to the United
States of America and to the state of
Oregon, and that I will serve them
honestly and faithfully against all
enemies whomsoever and that I will
obey the orders of the president of
the United States and of the govern
or of the state of Oregon and of the
officers appointed over me, according
to law and the rules and articles of
war. This oath is subscribed to with
the understanding that credit will be
given in the execution of this con
tract for the period which I have al
ready served under my current enlist
ment in the organized militia of the
state of Oregou."
The colonel aud companies will
each receive from the government
the sum of $500 a year, the first
lieutenants $240 a year and the sec
ond lieutenants $200 a year. All en
listed men will receive one-fourth of
the pay of the enlisted men of the
regular army. A private will get $4
a month or $4S a year, and corporals
and sergeants in proportion.
Issues Many Water
Permits in June
During the quarter ending June
30. 1916, State Engineer John H.
Lewis Issued 137 permits for the ap
propriation of water, including six
for the construction of reservoirs.
According to these permits, it Is pro
posed to Irrigate 7,616 acres of land,
store- 1,410 acre feet of water and
develop power at a number of small
individual power plants for private
use.

Obituary,
Robret P. Edglngton was born in
Brown county, Ohio, June 23, 1834,
and died at Ashland, Ore., July 3,
1916. He was the oldest of three
brothers and two sisters, of whom
two brothers are still living. He was
married to Julia A. Hallam. To them
four children were born. Two are
still living, Mrs. Frank L. Parker of
Hutchinson, Kan., and M. C. Edging
ton of Ashland. Mrs. Edglngton
died February 23, 1881, and on Janu
ary 31, 1883, Mr. Edglngton waa
married to Manie Fisher. To this
I union was born one son, Floyd B of
! Modest,o, Cal. Mrs. Edglngton died
I December 12. 1912.
On June
23, 1860, Brother Edg
lngton confessed Christ and was bap
tised,, being the first person in his
vicinity to accept Christ on the New
Testament plea. He was a faithful
member from that time to the end,
serving the church In an official ca
pacity, aud was an elder at the time
of his death. Though a great suf
ferer the last year of his life, he
maintained a uniformly cheerful dis
position. While he lived his seat In
the house of worship was never va
cant while he was able to attend.
Brother Edglngton was a veteran
of the civil war, enlisting in the sum
mer of 1S62, and was mustered out
at the close of the war as first lieu
tenant. Services at the grave by the
G. A. R. Sermon by the writer, from
1st Thes., 4:13.

children, where a man deliberately
drove on the track.
