War Means Fewer Forest Telephones With bids for furnishing wire to tho Forest Service recently advanced 45 per cent, and prices on other equipment considerably increased, material curtailment of the program for telephone line construction on the national forests this summer Is said to be In prospect. There are over 20,000 miles of telephone line on tho nntlonal forests and approximately 2,000 miles of new line was planned for the coming season. A certain amount of wire is re quired also for upkeep, since the lines are peculiarly subject to breakage from falling trees and similar causes. Every spring the 'forest rangers have to get the linos In order In prepara tion for the fire season, and although, to lessen tho effects of accident, the wires are mostly run on swinging In- sulatora suspendod from the trees, there are In the aggregate a largo number of repairs to be made. Notwithstanding the number of tel ephone lines already built, large areas are still without means of communi cation and consequently lacking In proper oqulpmont for fire protection. Not only aro the telephones used by the forest officers, but they are- a great convenience to tho public. Very often, It Is said, they enable Isolated settlements to have a means of com munication which they .could secure In no other way.
