When a man's party affiliation Is ao obscured by his efficiency as a public officer that the editor of The Voter inadvertently referred to him as a democrat Instead of a republican, the circumstances may be taken as an unusual indication of able adminis tration. Such Is the case of Ben W. Olcott, secretary of state, erroneously referred to by The Voter In last week's Issue as a democrat. Mr. Ol cott Ib and always ha been a repub lican. Ills selection for office was not based upon partisan considera tions, and his success In office cer tainly was not duo to political organ ization. The Voter's inadvertence was an unin tended compliment to Mr. Olcott's especial fitness for re-election, and while inexcusable from an editorial point of view, it was a mistake which carried with it a significant lesson. fl l forlii MshbyLexicon ARROW COLLARspring style, in two heights ClUtrr PEABOOY bCO. INC.M4KIR5 (By Virgil O. Strickler, C. S., a mem ber of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Bos ton, Mass.) Thursday night at the Elks Temple j E. V. Carter introduced Virgil O. Strickler to a large audience which bad gathered to hear the noted lec turer discuss Christian Science. He spoke as follows: As it becomes more generally un derstood that through the ministry of Christian Science people are being healed of sickness, sin, unhappiness, worry, fear, and other discordant con ditions, there is an ever-Increasing desire upon the part of the general public to learn how these results are accomplished. It Is the purpose of this lecture to explain how Christian Science does these things. There is no mystery about Christian Science healing, nor is it difficult to under stand. It can be stated without any reservation whatever that every per son who is willing to do so may learn how to heal sickness and to destroy the desire to sin for himself and oth ers through Christian Science. InvoHtlgntc Subject With 0mn Eyes. In approaching the Investigation of this subject one should do so with an open mind. Christian Science Is pro ducing certain very definite and very beneficial results, and it behooves every thinking person to try to un derstand bow they are accomplished. No progrgesB will be made by closing one's eyes to the facts and blindly denying their existence. Neither will It serve any useful purpose to at tempt to minimize what Christian Science has already accomplished. The honest investigator who desires to know the truth about the matter will take the caso as It stands. He will waste no time In fruitless bicker ing over established facts, but will strive to understand how the healing and regeneration are brought about. Both in the medical profession and among the clergy there are many such open-minded students, with the result that some eminent physicians are now sending to Christian Science practitioners those of their patients who do not recover under medical treatment; while many clergymen are openly declaring from their pulpits that the fruits of Christian Science are good, and not a few of tbem have left their pulpits to become Christian Science practitioners. These facts are worthy of serious consideration. If it Is true that Christian Science Is teaching people how to rise above sinful appetites and desires, and how to bo healthy and happy, then surely it is the greatest and most vital thing that can engage human thought. That Christian Science does these things to some extent at least is no longer an open question, and the proof of It is to be found In the prac tical benefits that have come to Its adherents. - Many Different Religious Reliefs. Another fact that should be taken Into account by every earnest investi gator of Christian Science is that there are many different kinds of re ligions in existence 'at the present time. It Is said that there are more than two hundred different kinds of the Christian religion alone, not to mention the hundreds of other forms of religions that are not Christian. It is a fact that people do entertain widely differing religious beliefs. In many Instances the differences are Irreconuilable, and yet every one be lieves with all of the sincerity of which he is capable that his own par ticular beliefs are true. It must be conceded that, In the main, all people are equally honest and equally sin cere in their religious beliefs. The only reason why they are grouped to gether !n different forms of religions Is because they honestly believe that through their own particular form of religion they will find the good which they so earnestly desire. Ah one considers the subject of re ligion from this broad viewpoint it becomes entirely plain that most of the people In the world are believing tiK their religion many things that are not true. There Ih only one truth about any subject, although there may bo many erroneous beliefs about It. This is true of religious subjects as of If one believes erroneously deprive him of the benefits that ! when it is finished, and every mortal would otherwise come to him through ' thought has been brought Into sub a correct understanding of the truth. jection to Christ, then man will be Likewise, if one wraps around him-' transformed from a sinning, suffer self the robes of self-satisfaction, and ing mortal into a state of peace and maintains that there is no spiritual j harmony. In each case erroneous be liefs must be displaced by positive knowledge before correct results can be attained. Every one will recognize not only the desirability, but the necessity, of exchanging false and erroneous be liefs about -religious matters for posi tive truth. - In no other way can he grow spiritually. Spiritual truth Is the truth about spiritual things, but as long as one believes erroneously about spiritual things be is on a false track and his erroneous belief! will than to obstruct spiritual growth. Moreover, it is plain that since re ligion in its true sense is spiritual truth. It necessarily follows that real religion and real science are one and the same, for truth whenever and wherever found Is capable of proof by demonstration. Hence the term, Christian Science, is perfectly correct, for it is a statement of the spiritual truth composing the Christian re ligion, and, as such, it may be proved by demonstration In healing sickness and destroying sin. The trouble with most of us has been that we have believed errone ously without knowing it. In my own case it was not until Christian Sci ence came to me and taught me the difference between spiritual truth and erroneous human belief that f learned how to dissect my own be liefs. No one could be more certain of the correctness of his religious be liefs than I was of mine at that time. I had been believing honestly and sincerely many things that I found could not possibly be true. Many scales began to fall from my eyes, and I then commenced to learn and experience for the first time the real significance of the words used by Jesus in the eighth chapter of John, when he said, "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." What Christian Science Seeks to Ac complish. Christian Science aims to destroy erroneous religious beliefs by substi tuting a knowledge of truth in place thereof, and to destroy out of the human mind all evil qualities by planting good qualities in their stead. It wages relentless warfare against all wrong mental qualities. It seeks to substitute love in place o hate, unselfishness in place of selfishness, honesty in place of dishonesty, and truth in place of error. It lays tre mendous emphasis upon the necessity for "bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (II. Cor. 10:5), as the Bible com mands. It shows that the cause of all disease and sin is mental, and not physical, and that both sickness and sin are destroyed by the evangeliza tion of the human mentality with truth and love. It teaches without any reservation whatever that the truth taught and practiced by Jesus, when understood and applied, is suf ficient without drugs or any material means to heal the sick and regenerate the sinner, and Christian Scientists everywhere are engaged daily in demonstrating and proving this to be true. Every student of religion should begin to give heed to what the Bible teaches concerning the importance of looking to the mental rather than to the physical for deliverance from hu man discord. We read in Romans viil. fi, 7, "To he carna'ly minded is denth; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it Is not subject to the law of God, neither, Indeed, can be." Again in Philippl ans if. 5 it Is said, "Let this mind be In you which was also in Christ Jesus;" and in RomniiB xii. 2, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." These significant statements from the Scriptures leave no room for doubt as to the cause of sin, disease and death, or their cure. Tho carnal mind is nothing more nor less than tho unregenerated human mind. It Is tho human mind In Its natural state, when filled with hatred, self ishness, deceit, dishonesty, and other evil qualities, and with superstition and false beliefs. These evil and er roneous mental qualities result in sin, disease and death, and In all hu man discord. Tho command is' to get rid of er roneous mentnl qualities, and to have In ns "the mind which was also In Christ Jesus," for In his mind there was not a Blngle sinful quality, nor any superstition or false religious be lief. Thus' the human mind Is re newed by the destruction of errone ous and sinful mental qualities, and the substitution In their place of qualities tnat inhere In the mind of the Master. As this renewing process goes on, sickness, suffering, and discordant conditions begin to disappear, and i To summarize the matter in a sin gle sentence, It can be said that Christian Science healing is accom plished through the activity of right thinking and right living, and In no other way can one demonstrate the Principle that heals. Honest Skepticism About Healing liy Spiritual Means. Although the healing of physical and mental diseases by spiritual means was widely practiced, both In Old Testament and New Testament times, and was expressly commanded by Jesus, and, although Christian Science during the last fifty years has actually healed in this way large numbers of people from all kinds of physical and mental diseases, there are still a great many people who honestly find it difficult to under stand how it is possible for the sick to be healed without drugs, and en tirely by spiritual means. Even among those who profess to believe in the Bible and In the omnipotence of God, there are many who have honest doubts that the power of God Is suf ficient or available to deliver from sickness, and these doubts often pre- MMMIMMMM HMMtHMMIMMMMMI The Oldest National Bank in Jackson County J i Member Federal Reserve System FIRST NATIONAL BANK Capital and Surplus $120,000.00 DEPOSITORY OF City of Ashland County of Jackson State of Oregon United States of America known and understood in part by Moses and the prophets, and which was perfectly understood and demon strated by Jesus, and by him taught to his disciples. There Is no mystery about it, and the results produced by Christian Science are the results which have always followed, and must necessarily follow, from the ap prehension and demonstration of spir itual truth. Christian Science is nothing more nor less than a return to primitive Christianity, and every one who turns to it fairly and honest ly will find In It that which will sat isfy his spiritual aspirations and meet his human needs. Mrs. Eddy's Discovery of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy is acknowledged to be the Discoverer and Founder of Chris tian Science, and many people ask what it Is that she has discovered. In reply it can be said that she has discovered the Law of Spirit which is Spiritual Truth. In the material realm many ma terial laws have been discovered. Sir Isaac Newton, for Instance, observed the movements of material bodies, vent the effort to gain an under- and conceived the idea that such standing of the way by which spirit- movements were governed by a law ual healing is accomplished. which he afterwards discovered and To all such it can be said that named the law of gravitation. This Jesus healed the sick without drugs, law can not be seen with the physical and, what Is more important to us, eyes, but Its existence can be proved he taught other people how to do so, thus proving that his method of heal ing physical disease by spiritual means could be taught to others, and understood and practiced by them. As the disciples walked up and In other ways. Likewise, Marconi gained the idea that another law ex isted, and he said that If he could discover it he would be able to trans mit meamcrpR hv ltn neencv from nne part of the earth to another without i SJ)Mt as tru,y as Sir Isaac Newt0 and understood by the men who wrought them, and she said that If she could discover the law it would be found to operate in the same man ner now as in Bible times; that It would bo a healing law, and would now heal people of slcknes and sin and every evil human condition the same as then. This Idea grew and expanded In her consciousness until it became the im pelling motive of her entire life. In the year 1866 she discovered the law of spirit, and named It Christian Sci ence. After waiting nine years, dur ing which time she subjected the Principle that she had discovered to the broadest practical tests in healing sickness and other forms of human discord, she published a statement of Christian Science in a book which she entitled "Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures." This book Is now everywhere recognized as the only text-book of Christian Science. A great religious movement has formed around its teachings, which In one generation has girdled the earth with Its churches. The spread of Christian Science has been phenome nal, and in every case its growth has resulted from the healing of the sick. Every adherent of Christian Science has actually been healed of some sick ness, disease or sinful appetite, and most of them have been healed of many such conditions. These facts are easily verified, and are worthy of very serious consideration. Spiritual Law. Mrs. Eddy discovered the law of down the country with Jesus, listen- any material wires. Some of the disciples seemed to grasp this truth and the manner of Its demonstration very slowly, but to In much the same way there was born In the consciousness of Mrs. Eddy the idea that there exists a law of spirit. She had observed that sometimes great suffering and dis tress were produced by material laws, and that even whole communities were devastated and aestroyed oy covered the Principle that governs the entire universe, Including every de tail In the lives of men. That su preme, creative, governing, omnipres ent Mind or Principle, Is God, the only Cause, the only Creator, the only Ruler of man and the universe. He then sent them forth with the command that they heal the sick, cleanse the lepers and raise the dead, and the Bible records that they were able to do so. ; Later these same disciples taught the Principle of spiritual healing which they had learned from Jesus to their own disciples, and history shows that on down through a period of about ten generations the healing of the sick by spiritual means con tinued to be a part of the regular ministry of the Christian church, and that the dead were raised during the first and second centuries. Moses and the prophets also healed the sick and raised the dead and did many other wonderful works In demonstra tion of the power of spirit to meet human needs, and the Old Testament Is filled with such instances. It will thus be seen that the knowl edge of spiritual truth, and the meth od of its application to deliver peo ple from sickness, sin, and every kind of evil human condition, has reap peared upon the earth at many times, and It is claimed for Christian Science that it Is the reappearance In our own generation of the understanding of the same spiritual law that was NEAREST TO EVERYTHING Hotel Manx San Francisco 'PowellSt.otQfrmlt Oregonians Head quarters while in San Francisco rates "Meet me at Y the Manx'?
