MOXDAV, OClOBEIt 13, 1913 Business Lien Want Telegraph Service There is much dissatisfaction in Talent over the present method of handling the telegraph service for this place. Talent is part of the Ashland telephone exchange and un til a few months ago all telegrams were sent via Ashland and where the parties had phones, as was the case with practically all of the business men, the telegrams were phoned di rect to them. However, some genius in the employ of the Pacific Tele graph and Telephone Company con ceived the plan of having them sent via Medford and then collecting a 25 cent long distance call for phoning them from Medford to the subscribers at Talent. This the business men seriously object to and are moving on the in terstate commerce and Oregon rail way commissions in an endeavor to secure a telegraph office at' Talent, or at least to have all Talent busN ness sent via Ashland and delivered to all patrons of the Ashland tele phone exchange without extra charge. Fister-Milburn Co., Props., Buffalo, N. Y. Pack 10,000 Cans In One Day's Run The highest run made by the Tal ent cannery this season was on Thursday, October 2, when the out put was over 10,000 cans. The company is still packing toma toes, and should the weather con tinue warm there might be several days' run yet. The cannery is expecting to put out a large number of apples, but mostly in gallon cans. TALENT NEWS ITEMS. The bells and whistles of Talent were in evidence Friday forenoon in honor of the" letting together of the waters from the two ends of the Panama canal. The whistles from Ashland and Medford could also be plainly heard. Under the new mail service the outgoing evening mail is sent to Ash land on the motor, leaving the office at 6:25 and going from there onto the limited for transportation out. Parties having mall to send should remember the hour and act accord ingly. Rev. Mr. Reames, the new pastor of the Talent M. E. church, has rent ed the Dunlap property formerly oc cupied by Rev. Mr. Way and has brought his family here. Mr. Reames comes highly recommended and Tal ent is able to secure a man of his calibre only because he Is In this section for his health. Tom Fuson Sells Out. Medford, Oct. 13. By a deal ne gotiated Friday, Thomas Fuson dis posed of his interest in the manage ment of the Page Theatre to his part ner, Bob' Gordon, who will have full and complete charge of the playhouse in the future. Mr. Gordon Is an ex perienced theatrical man. being for merly owner and manager of the ISis Theatre. Mr. Fuson will remain in the city, with the Western Union re lay station. Fuson is a former Ashlander and well known here. More than 3,000,000 acres of land are held as game preserves in Scot Odd Eellows Lease New Lodge Room The local Odd Fellows kdge has signed up a lease with the proprie tors of the brick store building to be erected on Main street for the use of the second story for hall pur poses. It had at first been the in tention to erect only a one-story building, but because of the lease the building will be made two stories high, the entire second floor being arranged for the use of the Odd Fel lows and such other orders as they may sublet to. Co-operation In Road Construction Secretary Houston of the Depart ment of Agriculture says that the state and federal governments should wo'k together for highway improve ment in order that a b.rce propor tion of the money annuav spent for road construction may not be wasted. In his own department the office of public roads has been demonstrat ing the value of proper road building by the construction of certain object lesson roads, and the forest service is carrying out his idi:a of national and state co-operation in road building. Tills money is expended for road im- provement under direct control of the secretary of agriculture The amount appropriated under this act, based on the receipts of the national forests for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1913, is $234,638. 63. From the 1912 receipts for this 10 per cent road item there is an additional $134,831.10, which is still available. In administering the 10 per cent road fund, forest officers charged with the actual plans and expend! tures in the neighborhood of their forests have, in almost all cases, se cured an equal or a larger co-operative fund from state authorities for the building of certain pieces of road. With the money thus expended many important roads are being built or put in, repair". One on the Wyom ing national forest, six miles long, makes accessible to farmers a large body of timber and opens up a re gion of gr,eat scenic beauty. In northwestern Arizona part of the fund will be used in connection with the LeFevre-Bright Angel road, im portant because it makes accessible to tourists the Grand Canyon of the Col orado, in one place the Ocean to Ocean Highway crosses the Apache national forest, Arizona, and on this project the forest service and the local authorities co-operated enthusi astically. On the Florida national forest in western Florida steel bridges and graded roads have, un-l der the stimulus of this fund, taken the place of corduroy, bog and sand. This federal road fund is now available in all national forest states of the west. Just as fast as returns come in, the forestry officials say, a similar fund will become available in states in which eastern national forests are being secured. Renzoate of Soda is Barred. Chicago. October 13. The United States coyrt of appeals upheld Tues day the Indiana state board of health in the benzoate of soda cases. The original action was filed in the Unit ed States district court at Indianapo lics when the Curtis Brothers Com pany sought to enjoin the state board from enforcing the law of 1907, mak ing It a crime to sell food containing benzoate of soda. Efforts were made Friday to secure definite news of the three hundred inhabitants of Solo mon, on Norton sound, forty miles from here, which was wiped from the map by the storm which wrecked Nome. Though it was understood none was killed at Solomon, It was feared there must be much suffering there. Reconstruction work at Nome marked time pending the arrival of supplies and materials. .
