NATIONAL BANK OF ASHLAND Service $175,000.00 MORRIS AIDS EX -CONVICTS. Portland Banker Sends Paroled Men to Wenatchee Fruit Ranch. Salem, Ore. W. Cooper Morris, convicted Portland banker, who is working with the convict gang on the Shell Rock road, near Hood River, has assumed the role of friend to the convicts, and is offering his Wenat chee fruit ranch as a haven of refuge and work to paroled men and re leased convicts. Already he has caused three men to be sent to the ranch. Two of these are paroled prisoners, who are still there. The third was not so sat isfactory to Morris. He was a dis charged convict who had served his time. Believing the man would have difficulty in finding employment, Morris gave him a position on the ranch, where he stayed a few days and then disappeared. This has not shattered the former banker's faith in his plan, however, as it is under stood he will ask the prison author ities to send other paroled men to his farm when they are in need of em ployment. Marris is now in charge of the commissary department on the road work. At first he was on the pick and shovel gang, a surveyor's gang, and later the mantle of a discharged commissary fell upon his shoulders. S LEEPW A LKER INJUR ED. Man Discovered on Sidewalk With Maimed and Bruised Body. Los Angeles, Cal. Considerable mystery surrounds a remarkable ac cident to Joseph Darwell, who re sides at 223 Towne avenue, and who was found bleeding and unconscious on the sidewalk in front of 1352 Wright street, more than a mile away, Monday morning. ' When found he was dressed only In his undershirt and drawers. His left hip was dislocated, four teeth gone, both lips frightfully gashed, both eyes swo"en shut, nose hang ing by a shred of flesh and both feet badly lacerated. The police surgeons say that his skull may be fractured. He is unable to speak or to otherwise explain what happened to him. The only theory the physicians have is that Darwell rs a somnam bulist and that he walked in his bare feet and underclothes 20 blocks, climbed to the roof of a building and fell off.
