ASHLAND TIDINGS. F riday I ..«Ml OBER 1 \ STATE ASI) COAST. 1 Albany is making an effort to wstuhlidi .4free fem. I Oregon city merchants have organized ¡1 l»oard of trade. Jason Owens, one of Lane county's e trlieet pioneers, is dead. Seventy students attend the college de partment of the State University. Pendleton has voted a debt of S3n."'«> for the erection of city water works. The paintings <>n exliibitioi the Me- ehanics' fair are said to be I- worth inore than S100,Ut)0. T.. lias a 3 4 carat diamond which was found by a Chinaman in a gulch mar that place. According to the Cheney (\V. T.) nite the farmers in that section paint their haystacks in order to protect them from rain. Mrs. Cawuiah. of Glencoe, Washington county, has a G-muntLs old Jersey heifer that gives milk. Crops never fail in Oregon. On the night of the 1th. a tire broke out in block one in Baker City, consum ing the entire block. The loss is plae-d I at 510,1X10, and insurance .S2H00. At Seattle there is an accumulation of 500 miles of splendid wire for the Mack ay-Bennett Telegraph. It will be put up as fast as the poles an- ready for it. The bondsmen of N. There is probably in Oregon no white "man’s” grave older than that of McFad den in Astoria. The inscription on the rough stone marking it indicates that he was buried in 1814, .anil that he was i drowned in crossing the river. Union Sentinel: Next year, judging from the present indication, there will lx* the greatest milling excitement iu the Pine creek mining district that has been known in the northwest for a long time. All reiHtrts from there are very encourag ing, and the camp haa ad',iuiced to that stage when its great ricliuess ami extent has been tested and is no longer doubt 1 l>y miners acquainted with the camp. MISCELLANEOUS Work and Overwork. It is a mistake to suppose that to work desperately, to lye ever intensely employ ed, is in itself praiseworthy. One of the best modern essayists says that to w ork in satiably requires less mind than to work judiciously. “ For a hundred men," says Arthur Helps, "whose appetite for work can be driven on by avarice, vanity, am bition, or a mistaken notion of advancing their families, there is alxiut one who is desirous of expanding his nature and the nature of others in all directions of culti vating many pursuits, of bringing him self and those around him in contact with the universe in many points of be ing a man and not a machine.“ At the present day hardly any eom- plaint is more common than that of an over-worked brain. The tradesman, the clerk, the professional man. all suffer from overwork. 'Tills leads to mental or nervous exhaustion, and the maladies re sulting from over-stimulus and prolonged fatigue. In every sphere of labor, the highest as well as the lowest, we see men whose time and strength are completely absorbed by the idea of "getting on.” Then life is one steady unceasing grind on the treadmill of daily routine. Thus things go on till the doctor has to be summoned and an enforced idleness, which is a miserable condition, is pre scribed, unless paralysis claims the victim. We all exhaust life with terrible facil ity there is no end to our ingenuity in devising plans for wearing it out. We eat and drink and smoke it: we exhaust it in business cares and anxieties. The hot, impetuous haste with which we live is the crying evil of the times. It were well, duriug the little spell of leisure now possible to enjoy, to try to so ar range our business duties that life may be more rational and more enjoyable, by being more restful and recreative.
