Pleasant tasting, safe and sure. That Gum Tree (Eucalyptus) cough Syrup. T K Bolton A co would call the atten tion of their friends and the public to this excellent preparation, made in Australia and San Francisco, California, from the leaves of a peculiar variety of the Euca lyptus or blue gum tree of Australia, ft has no sickening property to disturb the stomach, and is most reliable for curing coughs, colds, sore throat, whooping cough, bronchitis, croup and any tendency to con sumption. Sold by T K B olton . City Drug store, agent for Ashland Population of the United States. IClncinnsti Volkiiblatt. | » F 9 I r Bargains ! » Wit h hay above Shi, per ton it is very poor policy to feed cattle that when sold will not bring top prices. Gotxl ripe fruit is neve* too plentiful for use, but it may be so abundant that marketing will not give profit. Nobody has seen ground liarrowed too much as a preparation for wheat, for it is hardly possible to get too fine tilth. If «wine an* to lie kept on the farm the best profits will lie found in the finest breeds tliat run iuto matured meat the first year. Low prices for all kinds of farm prod ucts are very discouraging to farmers who wish to go to law, for costs run up with no abatement on account of hard times. When land will not produce grass let it go to weeds, for they are lietter than nothing, and if turned under will do something toward restoration of fertility. If any enthusiastic poultry-raiser has fouhd profit in the use of an incubator his story of success will have interest much in proportion to proofs necessary to remove incredulity. Deep tillage is the privilege to winch latent fertility in the lower soil responds with alacrity where the exercise gives in vitation, so multiplying fruits to the measure of enlarged resources. The methods of wheat farming ip these days of hurry and worry to get work done cheaply, are much inferior to those employed a few years ago when hindrances were less troublesome than now. Despite the numerous chapters on weed encroachments that have filled reams of agricultural pajers their extent increases, and each succeeding year finds them more firmly established. A blacksmith who does not perceive the requirement that the foot of a horse must be pared to natural shai>e after long wearing of shoes until the hoofs are overgrown, has an important lesson to learn, for no horse can travel easily with projecting toes and relatively shortened heels. Apple, peach, pear, plum and cherry trees set along boundary lines of farms interfere very little with cultivation, and their fruit is produced almost without cost after the trees are well established, while at the same time they may serve a useful purpose as screens to mitigate the force of driving storms. As soon as harvesting is over all the machines should tie cleaned up and put in perfect order and carefully stored. It is much easier to remember now if there is a bolt, nut or screw gone, or any little repair needeti, than it will be next season before they are wanted. If the wood work is given a coat of paint and the ironwork cleaned and oiled or covered with a coating of tallow and resin melted together they will last much longer. When costly machines are left out of doors for weeks at a time they are rusting out much faster than they would wear out while in use.—[Chronicle. f MERCANTILE—MANUFACTURING-MISCELLANEOUS. U STORIA. 4 By the excess of births over the deaths the population of the United States is annually increased by 2 f>er cent, accord ing to the most careful computation. In accordance with this, the nnmlier of in habitants can be ascertained with toler able accuracy, although a general census is taken only every ten years. To the figures obtained by the census, 2 per cent annually, including the number of immi grants in the course of the given year, is to be added. This estimate indicates that at this moment the population of the United States has already exceeded the sum of 60,000,1)00. The amount ex actly computed reached, on July 1st of the current year, the sum total of 00,025,- 000, and the probability is that these figures fall somewhat below the reality, inasmuch as the immigrant report it is well known, is never entirely complete. At the time of the last census, made July 1,1880, our population amounted to 50,155,783, so that for the six years which have since elapsed an increase of nearly 10,000,000 is to lie noted. There are only three countries whose population exceeds that of the United States numerically; namely, Russia. British India and China. All the rest fal| far behind the United States in the number of their inhabi tants. Germany lias nearly 15,000,000 less; France. Austria, Great Britain and Japan have over 20,000.000 less, and among the remaining slates there is not one that could exhibi 1 even half as many as this country. Bili'kleu's Arnica Salve. Fine Custom and Ready-made Clothing, Staple and Fancy Dry Goods, Fine Cloaks, etc. Boots and Shoes, Carpets, Oilcloths MISCELLANEOUS. The Captive Apache-. An Associated press dispatch of Sept. 13th from Washington has the following: It begins to look as though the wily Geronimo has played a sharp game upon his captora, and ¡onieoflu ;als are inclined to the opinion tliat the sax. ge murderer will lie able to escat e punishment. It was stated that he had surrendered un conditionally, but it appeare that he made a stipulation, the repo-' of which has been confirmed by advices received at the War Department, that lie would not lie turned over to the civil authorities for trial. If the Government respects the pledge made by those who effected the capture, it is a uestion whether or not he and his band can be made to atone for their crimes. It was at ‘list thought he miglr be brought before a military commission, bn* the statute., sjiecify that a commission can only be summoned in time of war. The case of the perpetra tors of the Sioux massacre in Minnesota during the late war was cited. They were tried by a military commission and thirty-eight of them were hanged as the result It was argued that they were in cited to their murderous work by agents of the rebellion, and it was a part of the movements of the Confederate force to create a diversion in the northwest and draw thither a part of the Union army for the suppress ion of the hostile redmen. In the present case Ger >nimo cannot lie treated as the head < " a hostile nation against wliicli this Government had de clared war, and there being no war a mil itary con.mission cannot be summoned in accordance with the law, nor can he be tried by court-martial, for such courts are only for officials of the army who have violated army regulations. Now, unless he can, in some way, be turned over to the civil authorities, there does not appear to lie any chance of bis getting his just deserts. That he richly deserves death, not even the most ardent Indian sympathizer will deny, but public opin ion, it is thought, would not sanction any violation of ¡he terms of his surren der, in order to wreak vengeance. It may turn out, therefore, to lie simply a case where General Miles has been hood winked by the wily chief. He and his fellow-murderers wit! Ire kept at, San An tonio, Tex., until the return oi the Presi dent and Secretary of War, when the matter wf I probably for" the subject of a Cabinet meeting.
