I ASHLAND /i o TIDINGS ASHLAND I TIDINGS ASHLAND ISSUED EVERY FRIDAY MORNING. W. H. LEEDS. Editor and Publisher, PROFESSIONAL CARDS. J. S. Howard, VOL. X. ASHLAND, OREGON, FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1886 THE LAST TRUMP! MISCELLANEOUS. OREGON “SWAMI" LANDS. During the early part of the last sua sion of the legislature, a committee was appointed t<> investigate the swamp land affairs of the State of Oregon. Through the illness of one member of the commit tee, the work dragged, and at the end of the session the committee was unable to report, ami asked for fuither time. Thia was denied them, and the report was therefore never made. State Sen ator Davenport, of Marion county, who introduced the resolution for in vest igation, has gone ahead with it himself, nud last week submitted to the public, through the Oregonian of Feb. 25th, a complete exposition of the swamp land transac tions, since the passage of the act of 1870. He ariaigusall the governors and their co-ass ciates tn the swamp land board, from Grover to Mo» dy, upon a well- shown charge <>f connivance tn the whole sale fraud* of the swamp-land grabbers upon the people of the United States. Every voter of Oregon should read what he nays. We have room tlus week for but a few extracts: forded the awamp lmd claimants to ac quire great areas of land, and this re port sl ows by affidavit that the state has made common cause with said claimants against the pre emption and homestead settlers upon the public domain. The •tale can properly defend the title to lands it conveys; but that is no reason why it should claim lands as swamp that are imt swamp, especially as such action can have no other effect than to swell the vast possessions of the monopolist*. The state agents being human mast commit some errors; that all of their er rors, as far as heard fr»»m, should be 11. favor of their employers, i* hardly con sistent »'ith an honest purpose to select only swamp lan<!s; or else their instruc tions from the state hoard where t<> select such swamp laud* as have the peculair famlty of reclaiming themselves; th «se iti which gradual reclamation, like that in the proof of John F. Miller, heietof »re quoted, has heen going on for a number <»f years. The federal agent, Ankeny, who wa* never suspected of being pre judiced »gainst the state's claims, threw out 48,000 acres with the state had been claiming for the swamp land claimants; and if we are to believe our own citizens, who are in the condition to know the facts, and wh«> are a» likely to be im- paitialandlruthfulas any wecubl select, we must conclude that the state manage ment is under the direction of the swam,» land claimants. The Hon. Wm. T»iwn- »end, receiver »»f the Like View land of- tice, télégraphe«! to the commissioner of the U. S.. laud office, Washington, D. C., October 14. 1885, as follows, to-wit: “I lea» tied that there is an effort be ing ma<le on the part of |*ersons laigely interested in swamp land selections to have the cases in this office suspended to await the action of special agents, and 1 h»'pe you will defer action thereon until a letter of this date from a register of this office and myself reaches you, as 1 believe you will be satisfied that the proiiosition is not in aood faith.'
