X Burnett rem ark e 1 that whenever one was killed it seemel that 400 came to the funer al We have o'ten thought of this remaik while observing the little effect apparent, f um the most persistent scattering of po son in tbe squirrel districts in Lake county. Now it appears, that a new plan has been adopted in California, which has proven wonderfully efficacious, where tried In Eastern Oregon, where the lands inhabited by squirrels are usually covered with a :ank growth of sage and greasewood, the Califor nia suffocation scheme can be practiced very easily. Let some of tbe sage brn-h people try it and report tbe result of tbeir experi ments. It is ret«onable to presume that death by strychnine is attended with the most excruciating horrors, far worse even than “shuffling off tbe mortal c«»il” through suffocation; then, since the public weal de. mands tbe extermination of our li'tle e >e- mies, let its be charitable enough to take them off by a less terrible means than thaï usually resorted to by our ranchmen, We quote from tbe C ukontqlk : To the E ditob of the CnPONtcije—Sir: Will yon please to publish the following method of exterminating -*quirrels. and there by save to the farmers of this State tbe $70.- 00G expended annually for pois >n. beside* five tiin«*s this »urn in labor lost, in trying to save their crops troin destruction by these pests? The way to do it is; Burn on the mouth of every squirrel hole as much dry brush or other combustible m «ferial as will make a bri.-k fl e, fo at least fiftee « minu'e«: as soon as the fire ceases to blaze, and while the cogls are glowing, scrape them in quick y and tramp the hole so that no gas can es cape. It any doubt the effi'iency of this process, or think that the squirrel problem is not ro eerily solved, their incredulity, howeVsr hopeless, m ly be enrol by a visit to Amlrew Stengel's grain fields and pastille lands of over 2<iO acres, near La Honda. San Mateo county, the hut-bed of this specie» of tbe squirrel trib , where ten cents apiece was offered last year for their scalps, and this rate was actually paid by the occupant of these lands for all 1nat could be killed by any means, and where these torments have held the'r ground >or years bef >re, winning every fight in tbe war for extermination with «carcelv any perceptible diminution in number The reason why the above m *tl.*o-l is sure death to the squirt el is obvious when it is remembered that nothing that b'e’thes c «n live without oxygen, which element is not only cut off by ibis burning over the mouth of tbe hole, hut a |.«or'io:; w'thdrawn from within, to feed th«* fl me This.follow- nd by the imine lia*e co. fl emerit of (he ani- tDal in the ca.bo ic weid gag f>-< m the cha*** coal, together with th it thrown <>ff in breath ing, and there i« left not even the gh"8t of a chance for its life.
