[Condensed from State Exchangee]
Messrs Odell A Jackson of the Siatex-
man have dissolved partnership. The
paper will be conducted by Gen. Odell
in future.
The Albany D'mocra' announces
that its editor C»cn. M. V. Brown is
convalescing from his severe spell of
sickness.
About $000,000 worth of cattle have
been sold from Grant County since
May last.
At the La Fayelte Academy there
are now 154 pupils—an unprecedented
nnmber.
J. W. Allen, of Yamhill, 1ms sold his
farm near Amity for $10,300, and
moved into La Fayette.
The li> > says that a little child name d
Annie O. Donnel was so badly scalded
at thb Good Samaritan hospital last
Monday that she died on the following
day. She got into a bath tub filled
with hot water, and was so badly in
jured before she could be taken out
that death resulted. Her father is an
inmate of the insane asylum.
The Mountaineer reports that a man
named James Waldon was found dead
in a small pond near the mouth of
Three Mile creek, about a mile and a
half above the Dalles, by some boys
who were out duck-sbooting. On ex
amination of the body the coroners
jury rendered a verdict of accidental
drowniDg.
The Dalles Itemizer commenced its
fourth volume with its issue of Dec 1.
It deserves a liberal support from the
citizens of “old Polk,” in whose inter
est it labors.
During the month of November
there were recorded in the county
clerk’s office for Marion Co., 74 deeds
and 50 mortgages. During the same
time there were 20 marriage licenses is

Losebnrg came near having a first-
class sensation on the 27th. A nnmber
of festive gentlemen had imbibed a
quantity of “tarantula juice,” and by
wav of variety began calling each other
anything but gebtlemen. One of the
party got “on his ear” and pulled.a re
volver with the apparent intention of
putting au eternal quietus to the noise
ot another, whom he fancied bad said
t >o much, when a bystander thrust his
hand under the filling hammer of the
pistol, and tuerebv prevented a drunk
en murder. This kind of a thing is
getting rather too frequent, and it
seems to us that our Marshal might
talc - a hand, with credit to hiruselt and
profit to the city treasury.— riaiiukalcr.

“Jones, have you heard of the fire
that burned up the roan’s house and
lot?”
“No, Smith; where was It?”-
“Here in this city.”
“What a misfortune to him. Was it
a good house?”
“Yes, nice house and lot—a good
home for any family.”
“What a pity. How did the fire
take?”
“The man played with fire, and
thoughtlessly set it himself.”
“How silly! Did you say the lot
was burned too?”
“Yes, lot and all: all gone slick and
clean.”
“That is singular. It must have
been a terrible hot lire, and then I don’t
see how it could have burned the lot!”
“No, it was not a very hot fire. In
deed it was so small that it attracted
but little attention, and did not alarm
anybody.”
“But how coul I such a little fire burn
up a house and lot. You haven’t told
me.
“It burned a long time—more than
twenty years. And, though it seemed
to consume very’ slowly, yet wore away
about $150 worth every year, till it was
all gone.”
“I don’t understand you yet. Tell
me where the fire was kindled, and all
about it?”
“Well, then, it was kindled in the
end of a cigar. The cigar cost him, be
himself told me, §12,50 per month, or
$150 a year, and that in twenty-one
years would amount to $3.150, besides
all the interest. Now, the money was
worth at least 10 per cent., and at that
rate it would double once in seven years,
so that the whole sum would be more
than $20,(XX). That would buy a nice
house and lot iu any city. It would
pay for a large farm in the country.
Don’t you pity the family of the man
who has slowly burned up bis home?”
“Whew! I guess you mean me, for
I*have smoked more than twenty years,
But it didn't cost as much as that, and
I haven’t any house of mv own. Have
always rented—thought I was too poor
to buy a bouse. And all because I have
been burning it up! What a fool I
have been!”
The boys had better never set a fire
which costs so much, and which,
though so easily put out, is yet likely,
if once kindled, to keep burning all
their lives.
