It's hard to imagine a more absurd proposotlon. Every pauper m tne u. b, would come to Oregon. A sane man cannot conceive of such a condition. A man and his family who have failed to accumplte a horre are unfortun ate. Would it holp them, how ever to loan them $1500. Noth ing is easier to get rid of than cash and the next thing the bor rower would know, his money would be gone and he would be worse in the hole than ever. A man who has failed to ac cumulate a home would stand small chance of paying back $1500. Why not change the law and simply give the propertyless per son $1500 outright. There would bs as much sense to it. The pronosed Land and Loan Law penalized thrift and puts a premium upon shlftlessness and extravagence at taxpayers expense. From an industrial standpoint it would kill the state, as Indus try could not nssume such a bur den and survive. jk tiffed v! ELECTRIC SPARKS Peace at any price ' would make a bigger hit with the wo men, If a price were given it, and announcement made that it had been reduced to $2.48. Mr. Edison says there will be ! no poverty in a hundred years. There certainly won't be any for us. Germany must be greatly amazed to know that Wilson was a professor of history, and not of belles lettres. Being a provisional President seems to be just about as ex citing in Ireland as in Mexico. Caruso says he Is willing to fight, and he certainly ought to be a wonder at charging. Billy Sunday has converted several baseball players, but we shall feel less skeptical when he corrals a few umpires. Three hundred and twenty five railroads went through the last fiscal year without a single fatality to a passenger in a train accident. The "Bafety first" campaign has amply justified it eslf.
