It Is no more trouble to make a chocolate custard than it Is a plain one, and tne chocolate is a cnange. Children especially enjoy a custard made In this way. The proportions are two cupfuls of milk, one ounce ot chocolate, two eggs, sugar to taste, usually about three tablespoonfuls, a pinch of salt and half a teaspoonful of any preferred flavoring. Melt the chocolate in a double boil er. iJour tne mine in ana let it come to a boil. Beat eggs, sugar and salt together, and pour the boiling milk over the mixture and strain into cus tard cups or one large dish as pre ferred. Set In a pan of hot water and bake in a moderate oven. I suppose you know how to tell when the custard is done. If not, then the test is a knife put into the middle of the custard. A bad school report, which he thought would induce his parents to punish him, caused a boy of twelve years to commit suicide at Relnicken dorf, a suburb of Berlin, a few days ago. T.he child crept at dusk into a stable and hanged himself with a hal ter from a low beam. SURE WAY TO KILL ROACHES Preparation ut Borax and White Sugar Is Fatal to the Filthy I meets. Mix dry, powdered borax with Its own bulk of white sugar, and set In shallow vessels all about where the crawling things disport themselves. Renew the mixture every fev days, taking care to sweep up and burn all the dead insects. Paint visible pipes, and the spaces where they enter the wall periodical ly with turpentine. Let the turpen tine run down and around the pipes, especially hot water pipes. But be careful to do it when the water Is cooL Now and again pour a spoon ful of pure turpentine down sinks and traps. Cut Irish potatoes in half, dip the cut sides in the borax and sugar and lay them about under sinks, tubs and closets. Do this toward evening. In the morning gather the potatoes, which should lie, cut side down, very quickly, and drop them into bucket ot bollng water. As your sin cere personal friend I ought to speak freely, but as a husband and father J am restrained." How This Toothsome Dessert Is Pre pared In the Country Where It Originated. Skin one-half pound of beef suet and chop finely, add to It eight table spoons of flour, one-half pound of rai sins, one-quarter pound ot mixed peel, one-half grated nutmeg, two teaspoon fuls of cinnamon, one-quarter pound raisins, one-quarter pound of cur rants, a pint of fine bread crumbs, two tablespoonfuls mixed spice, four table spoons of desiccated cocoanut or shredded almonds, pinch salt ' Mix all together with a small cup of milk, tour eggs well beaten and added one at a time, the Juice of a lemon, wine glassful of rum or brandy. Mix well, put into a well-buttered basin, boil for about four hours or steam at least five. When ready to serve, turn out, put sprig of holly in the top, pour brandy around it and light with a match. Send to table blazing. Compressed Sponges. A compressed sponge Is a bit of toilette daintiness intended specially for travelers, though It appeals as well to the stay-at-home who is an ultra- hygienlst. The . sponge is of com pressed absorbent cotton about the size of a twenty-five cent piece, and half an inch in thicknes. Dropped Into water it becomes saturated and expands to the size of a small face cloth, large enough to wipe the face free from dust and grime. Try out pork and Remove scraps, wipe meat, sprinkle with salt and pepper, dredge with flour and brown entire surface in pork fat Place meat in earthen dish, surround with vegetables, peppercorns and three cups boiling water. Cover close ly and bake four hours In slow oven. The reason for browning the meat Is that it keeps the juice in and it does not get so dry. Also be sure to add boiling water. This Is fine. SCUB, which was the scene of many activities during the Balkan war, was the key to the Serb side of ,Turkey. The city has for decades been the scene of insurrection, massacre and turmoil One who would go to Uscub, even In normal times, must be pre pared to be Inconvenienced. In Turkey, trains dare not ran at night, for fear of dynamite outrages, and as a result, the train from Nlsch, In Servla, the nearest place of Im portance, leaves at half-past five in the morning. , Once Independent The trip Is made Interesting by a review of what Uscub has stood for in the past. In the beginning of things. Uscub was known as Dardania, origi nally an 'Independent empire, which was swallowed up by the Roman Em pire In 71 B. C., when' Uscub became the capital of the Province of Dar dania, but now under the name of Scopl. At the opening of the eleventh century, however, Scopi had become a part of the vast Bulgar empire, to which tradition is again today revert ing, in the Balkans, with view of re viving the same, and then, about 1246, It, along with all Macedonia, was torn away by the war ruler, Vatazes. Uscub, therefore, has been a Balkan battlefield, time and again, in the past. The Serb emperor captured It In the day when Greater Servla was at its zenith. There were battles here between Bulgars and Byzantines, and little time to reach and Inspect thor oughly. Closer by, In the city Itself, there's a wonderfully pretty mosque with a konak, or palace. A Picturesque Town. Uscub is made picturesque In that it Is practically divided by the arching stone bridge over the muddy, whirling river. This river, its current excep tionally fast, Is lined with rather pret ty, old, stone quays. Of course, at Its bridges there are police; In fact, po lice are everywhere and these carry guns on their shoulders, as would the soldiers at home. So, too, everywhere) there are Moslems, wearing fez or turban, but otherwise clinging to the European dress for the most part Nevertheless, the numbers who still retain the red jacket, blue bloomers and heavy red belt In addition to the fez, are far from small Oft from the main street Uscub re solves into a rather uninteresting town. After all, the best part to It is that view on entering. But there are some odd characteristics. For exam ple, the Christian women go barefoot; wearing clogs under the sole. Little boys don the fez, except the gypsies, whose children run nude, regardless of sex. while the elders, too, axe half naked. Continue up the muddy street and you reach a section of two-story homes of more modern style and cheap stores. There Is no enterprise evi dent, everything seems slow the country smacks of Arabian Nights Delicate Three Egg Cake. Two cups of pulverized sugar,' three fourths cup of butter, one cup ot sweet milk, one and one-half cups each of corn starch and flour. ' and tout level teaspoons of baking powder. Mix butter and sugar to a cream, then add milk, next corn starch and part of the flour with the baking pow der sifted with it; next the whites and yolks of three eggs beaten to a froth and lastly the remaining of the flour. Use any flavoring desired. In baking any kind of cake in loaves the pans should be lined with a piece ot oiled paper cut to fit the bottom of the pan and pressed down closely before put ting In the batter. ' White Wood Work. Lettuce and Pimento Salad. - Get the canned pimentos, rinse them in cold water. Arrange the let tuce on each plate, lay In the mid dle of it a pimento, opening this and putting in the center a cube of cream cheese and folding the pimento ovei it so that the cheese Is half concealed. Pour French dressing over the salad. Cleaning Coarse Furs. Water will not harm the coarsei furs, such as are used for carriagi robes. In fact, they may be scrubbed with hot soapsuds, using a pure white soap, afterward using a comb Witt strong teeth through the fur. Paint on fur can be removed by using turpentine. Small, dark furs can be cleaned by sponging with alcohol. Hot cornmeal rubbed into fur will help to restore any lost luster. Queen Fritters. Cook one-fourth cup butter In one half cup water. When boiling add one-half cup flour. Stir quickly until mixed and remove from fire. Add two unbeaten eggs, one at a time Beat till smooth. Drop by spoonfuli into deep fat Fill with apple sauce and sprinkle with sugar. Cocoanut Jumbles. ' One pound of grated cocoanut, three fourths of a pound of sugar, three eggs and a large spoonful of flour, Pour on buttered pans and bake. It was at his death that the great Serb empire fell and Uscub be came the booty of the Turks. They changed Its name to the present one, and made it capital of a sandchak, or district 1 Uscub's decline thereafter Is mark ed by but one break ot note, that In the seventeenth century a colony of Ragusans established itself here and surrounded the city with splendid vineyards, as well as organizing a tremendous export of local products, notably wax and leather. For a year (1689) the Austrians also held Uscnb, but had to release It and It Is Turk ish since) Tourlstlcally, Uscub repays a brief stay on one's trip through Macedonia. Lying as It does on the left shore of the Wardar, there is an Interesting bridge, built away back In the times of the Sultan Mohammed n. Just above the town Is an interesting fortified castle and passes Indicate landmarks that show where, an hour's distance to the northwest, a long aqueduct of Byzan tine times remains. These points, though, require some times. Side streets consist of walls to yards, each with double door oi wood and heavy knockers, as again la the tales of Bagdad. These streets are very narrow; above them the lat ticed windows overhang.
