Dated, this 4th day of October, 1912. 1 BertGeer, Sheriff for Lincoln County, Oregon. SHERIFF GEEK EXPLAINS. In reference to the clause in tlV salary meesure, which is to be voted cn this election, allowing the actual traveling expenses of the Sheriff, I wish to explain my position. I urged thn. passage of the act allow ing the Slier iff actual traveling ex panses while on duty'for the county in the field because I did; not and do not think it is riglit that the Sieriff be required to pay these expenses out of his salary. , The aggregate sum ot expenses m a year or a term is an unknown quantity depending cn the volume of work to be done in the field. Nine-tenths of the' people I have had occasion to tell that the Sheriff had to pay his own 1 expenses and the expenses of his deputies while on duty in the field believed the other way about and have told me they supposed that the Sheriff's ex penses were paid by the county out side of the salary and that his dep uty hire while in the field is a side issue from the sa'ary. The num bers of the measure are 376 and 377 on the ticket. The bill which was passed by the Legislature and then put up to the voters by refer endum petition, provides for the present salary of $1800, but that the Sheriff be allowed his actual traveling expenses while on duty in the field, providing also that he must furnish vouchers for the items of expenses which are to be audited by the County Court before the ex penses are allowed.
