NORMAL SCHOOL NOTES.
j The work in all the departments
cf the school is progressing very
satisfactorily and mere interest than :
ever is manifested in tne wcrk by
i the students.
j One thing which is attracting
.much attention at the present time
j is the play-ground movement.
jThc need of systematized and sup
ervised play for children is being
, felt more and more, both in the
! home and the school, and, as a re
sult cf this need the regular play
.ground ccursj has been introduced
into the Normal. Miss Gertrude
: Wilcox, who is a graduate cf Wel
J lesley College, is giving a course to
i all eeniors. Miss Wilcox has had
! much experience in supervision of
play grounds in school and cities
' of the East and is thoroughly com
' petent to give the course in the
1 school here.. All features of play
; ground work and management are
'brought in and students coach
.games and become thoroughly
familiar with the duties of super
j vising and maintaining playgrounds,
j All the large cities are maintaining
, play grounds in order that the
j children may have the advantage
i of play, which is so neccessary to
, their physical growth. Play, when
supervised, has also a mental and
moral side. Children are taught
;fairnes3 and respe:t for other's
j rights, a knowledge of which will
I make them better men and women.
I We only can have healthy minds
1 when we have healthy bodies, and
jplay, which is suited to the age of
j the child, is a great factor in de
j veloping a healthy tody,
j The first issue of the "Norm"
I the official publication of the Ore
gon Normal, came out just before
the Thanksgiving vacation. The
paper, taking into consideration the
; difficulties of the first publication,
; was a success. Every department
j was most excellent end the staff is
j certainly to be congratulated. The
cover design was the work of cne
j of the students and was a credit lo
i the art department. The Clirist
jmas number will be cui in the near
future and all are looking forward
to it with great interest.
Different members of the faculty

They report that much interest is
shown in the Normal throughout
the state and many are coming in
after the first Semester.
A club for the study of fie Eng

the students in the English Depart

"Entre Nous,." It is the intention
to study Shakespeare's productions
during the first Semester. We
have had but two meetings but
both have been very instructive and
enjoyable.
Cyrus Walker, chaplin of the
State Grange, and the oldest living
white child born west of the
Rockies, gave a very interesting
and instructive address on the pio

shall not be disappointed.
