They are strictly first class goods and something which anyone may be proud to receivs. NORMAL SCHOOL NOTES. j The work in all the departments cf the school is progressing very satisfactorily and mere interest than : ever is manifested in tne wcrk by i the students. j One thing which is attracting .much attention at the present time j is the play-ground movement. jThc need of systematized and sup ervised play for children is being , felt more and more, both in the ! home and the school, and, as a re sult cf this need the regular play .ground ccursj has been introduced into the Normal. Miss Gertrude : Wilcox, who is a graduate cf Wel J lesley College, is giving a course to i all eeniors. Miss Wilcox has had ! much experience in supervision of play grounds in school and cities ' of the East and is thoroughly com ' petent to give the course in the 1 school here.. All features of play ; ground work and management are 'brought in and students coach .games and become thoroughly familiar with the duties of super j vising and maintaining playgrounds, j All the large cities are maintaining , play grounds in order that the j children may have the advantage i of play, which is so neccessary to , their physical growth. Play, when supervised, has also a mental and moral side. Children are taught ;fairnes3 and respe:t for other's j rights, a knowledge of which will I make them better men and women. I We only can have healthy minds 1 when we have healthy bodies, and jplay, which is suited to the age of j the child, is a great factor in de j veloping a healthy tody, j The first issue of the "Norm" I the official publication of the Ore gon Normal, came out just before the Thanksgiving vacation. The paper, taking into consideration the ; difficulties of the first publication, ; was a success. Every department j was most excellent end the staff is j certainly to be congratulated. The cover design was the work of cne j of the students and was a credit lo i the art department. The Clirist jmas number will be cui in the near future and all are looking forward to it with great interest. Different members of the faculty have been called to various perts of the state to assist in institutes from time to time. Pretilent Acker man', Mr. Gentle, supervisor of the training department, and Miss Shearer, critic teacher of primary grades, were called as instructois to the meeting of the Eastern Ore gon State Association of Teachers. held at Baker during Thanksgiving. They report that much interest is shown in the Normal throughout the state and many are coming in after the first Semester. A club for the study of fie Eng lish classics has been formed y the students in the English Depart ment. The club has been nampri "Entre Nous,." It is the intention to study Shakespeare's productions during the first Semester. We have had but two meetings but both have been very instructive and enjoyable. Cyrus Walker, chaplin of the State Grange, and the oldest living white child born west of the Rockies, gave a very interesting and instructive address on the pio neer days of Oregon. Mr., Walker concluded his remarks by singing a T ... jargon song ana giving the war wnoop, which was highly apprecia ted. Each senior is expected to de liver an oration or talk in chapel during the year and the first speak er Was Miss Alice Morrison, who gave a splendid oration, the sub ject being "Laurel Wreathes." The subject matter of the oration and her delivery were both excel lent. We are looking forward to theso chapel programs and we know from this beginning that we shall not be disappointed. Among the social events of the past few weeks and those of the coining are and were: Oa Tuesday evening, November 28 the gymnas ium was the scene of another very brilliant party for the students and invited guest3. The room was prettily decorated in the school col ors, crimson and gray. Varicus games and dancing were induged in during the evening snd fruit punch was served. Prcf.
