- Cy r. Mmdn VOLUME 11 TOLEDO, LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 1909. NUUBER 15 That Teachers' Institute. That annual institute is a thing of the past, bo far as the institute is concerned, but the many good things that we learned will not be forgotten soon, if ever. There were 47 teachers in attendance. If that is not the largest number that ever attend an institute in this county, I think that it is not far below the greatest number. Last year I think there were but 30. There were some visitors. We are glad to see them, they are always welcome. With the exception of President Campbell taking Prof. Alderman's place on the program and Supt. Ackcriiiin dividing time with Prof. Ressler in his address, the program was carried out about as it was planned. All who were there seemed to realize that it was for their good that the able instructors left their poBts of duty and came to make the hard places easy for the teachers of Lincoln county, if for nothing else, and we who know Tvhat they received, know that it was not for the money that there was in it. The school law as ex plained by Mr. Chas. II Jones and Supt. J. H. Ackerman caused the ' teachers to think as much as any other one discussion if not more. We all know more about it than we did. It seems to be the aim of the instructors to tell the teachers what to teach, more than how to teach. They seem to think the teachers can do better work if they know the subject, than if they know how to teach and don't know the subject. As good as this one was we will all hope that the ones that are yet to xme will l better. ' Tuichera of the county present were, Jessie Thomson, F. G. Buchanan, Harriet Eaton, Hazel Gearhart, R. F. For the present it is to,u' . " XMU"' ' be a monthly publication, but it9 , editor, W. F. Keady, hopes to make it a weekly by the first of the year. I The Journal comes out a lour, column quarto, all home print and is full of good, live, local reading mat ter, well illustrated with local scenes. It goes without saying that the Waldport Journal will bt a great help in developing this progressive little town and surrounding com munity. Here's hoping to Mr; Keady and the Journal . The O. 1?. DeLaurier contest case was heard before Miss Ethel Ross here last week. The government has become so economical in the handling of these cases before the County Clerks and U. S. Commis sioners that these officials have re fused to hear tho cases. The clerks and commissioners are now allowed but 10 cents per folio, while notary publics are allowed 25 cents. The government should go a step further in the economy business and cut out these fake contest cases, thereby ! not only saving the government, but also saving the poor homestead er money. A Letter. Burrough, Cal., May 25, '09. For the sake of the good people and enquiring friends of Lincoln county, Oregon, I submit the fol lowing: Well we find ourselves in Burrough Valley, 40 miles north east of Fresno, Fresno county, Cal ifornia. We have found just what we were looking for, a good place for lung trouble. It is said to be the healthiest place in California. Burrough valley is a small valley up in the mountains about 2000 ft. elevation. We are pleasantly loca ted have not yet bought. Wife's health is improving and this moun tain air with every day Bunshino makes mc feci like a Trnn nf forty. It is harvest time here now, and the boy,and I have struck a good job. I have been mowing wheat the past three days and am only commenced. Wheati oats and bar-' ley are raised here but it is cut for hay. Almost all kinds of fruit are grown. Ihere are three gold mines near by. A few days ago I helped ' a neighbor load a load of bailed hny and take it over to the food stable of the Pineridge stage line,' ft dis tance of five miles. We got over all right, but when coming back in a sharp turn in the road we met a mule whacker with twelve mules and a trail wagon. We had to un- got where they irrigated but I am disappointed. I havent seen a gar den anywhere as good as the one I left. Rairi for me instead of irri- gation. I will say right here if you are well and have no other excuse only the rain, you liad better he still. We have lots of eood thinet to eat ftere, kind neighbors and friends, and we are happy. w6 c, aumivais. Notice to Bidders.
