Bob Mann left Saturday morning for Fort Stephens where he will work the next few months. Herbert Kyniston has been work ing at the livery barn during R. N. j Warnock'8 absence in California. Dick Christiansen came home from Empire M nday evening for a visit at home. Dick is a member of the life saving crew of that place. Hon. B. F. Jones of 'Independ ence passed through to the lower bay Inst Friday evening. He re turned to Toledo the first of the week. ' Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Litchfield came up from Yaquina Saturday morning for a visit with Mrs. Litch-! field's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McCluskey. Reverend Whittlesey of Newport passed through Tuesday morning en route to Eugene where he has ; accepted the call to the pastorate of the Presbyterian church of that place. The machinery for the dredge Chetco arrived Monday evening and was unloaded Tuesday. The barge j is nearing completion and work will j soon be commenced on the install i ing of the machinery. It is expect ed that the dredge will be in com mission by the first of June. The Best on the Ooast. Road Supervisor J. D. Logan in forms ua that they have just com pleted the survey of tlio Toledo Newpot road. The new survey starts at tho foot of Buford Hill and extends to the city limits of New port. The new road will lie on a six per cent grade or less and will also shorten the distance nearly a mile. Ralph Hamar was in the city Monday. George Stephenson left Monday morning for Portland. John Fdlmsbee of FJk City pass ed through to the lower bay Wed nesday evening. S. G. Irvin of Newport was a passenger for Chitwood Wednesday to attend the Fruit Growers meet ing. Miss Blanch Jeffreys, after a visit with her aunt, Mrs. T. P. Fish,, re turned to her home at Corvallis yesterday morning. A. Bradeson received the lumber last week for the erection of a new residence on his farm a milo north of town. Work will begin at once. T. P. Fish is treating his store building to a coat of paint. The looks of many of the buildings in town would be greatly improved if they were treated to paint. The baseball season on Yaquina Bay will open next Sundhy at New port. . At that time the Newport team will play the Siletz boys. The following Sunday Elk City is scheduled to play Newport at the Resort City. These games will probably draw a large crowd of fans from Elk City, Toledo and Siletz. . Mrs. Fish's millinery opening last Saturday drew a large crowd of ladies of Toledo and the surround ing country. Many pretty hats were on display, and many of the ladies were made happy with an faster lionnet. Mrs. Fish is always up to date with her millinery, and this fact is appreciated by her customers. In this issue appears the notice of Road Supervisors E. M. Stanton and Robert Tronson, calling for bids for grading the Toledo-Depoe Slough-Siletz wagon road. It is desired that bids will 1 received at the regular term of Commissioners' Court which meets on May 5th, and that work on the road can bo commenced as early as possible. It is hoped that this road may be completed this Summer, and in order to do so work must necess arily begin at once. Last Saturday evening Mrs. E. M. Stanton and Miss Hattie Gillette entertained a number of friends at a whist party at their home on Sec ond street. Three tables being rill ed. Mr. Rilea carried off the prize for winning the most games, and J. S. Akin received the booby. At twelve o'clock a most, delightful lunch was served. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. E; M. Stanton, Miss Gillette, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Akin, Mrs. R. A. ' Arnold, Misses Ailecn Hawkins and Ruth Ofste dahl, Messrs. Arthur Nye, Rilea, Morris Anderson and R. E. Collins. Waldport Items. S. J. Irvin, of (Newport, was a Waldport visitor last week. Roy McMillin has accepted a position in the Lumber Comyany's store. Mrs. Mary A. Gault is visiting her daughter Mrs. J. A. Peterson of Toledo. Dr. Linon visited Waldport last week and lost a diamond ring and . a purse containing fifty dollars. Frank L. Buker and Sam Harcle rode have been butchering in the neighbornood of Big Creek. Oscar Peterson is at Newport, hustling orders for the Waldport Lumber Company. Thu3. far he has the Company swamped. C. E.' Hawkins was in town on the scvunth to hold a short inter view with Judge Goin. Mr. Haw kins retimed to Newport the same evening. A number of Yachats peoplo made trips to Waldport last week. ' The good weather has made team ing a little more pleasant than dur ing the rain Waldport can boast of a lady barber. She is Miss Alice Griffin, formerly of Portland, and is able to hold the; position. A coal oil lamp exploded last Thursday night at the residence of W. T. Crocker, doing some damage to furniture but being extinguished before damaging the building. Tho joke ia on William Wann of the Lumber Company. Last fall he shipped all tho potatoes he could get to Portland. Now he has had to place an order with Mason, Ehr man & Co. of Portland for fifty sacks to supply the home trade. They will arrive on the Condor. The usual good program was heard at the last meeting of the Commercial Club. Miss Florence Wheelock edited and read the club paper which contained the usual quota of club jokes and items of in terest. A number of the members were called on for one minute speeches. The new crab law does not suit those engaged in that remunerative business on the bay. They say the season should have been entirely closed during July, August and September rather than having the shipment out of the county restrict ed during these months. Those who intend to fish during the clos ed season for shipping declare they will not cut the price. , Tho Condor made several trips between Waldport and Newport last week carrying supplies and lumber. The lumber orders have been turn ed in so fast that it has been im-t possible to keep up and the mill . was run several nights .last week. . Even the logging camps had to op erate at night and some special orders were cut for the new electric light plant at Newport. The logs for these were cut night of tho sixth and the timlcrs were delivered in Newport on the seventh. . All the schoolchildren and their friends turned out last Friday after noon to work on the school grounds. A number of stumps were removed and the brush was taken from a large portion of the school grounds. A big pile of brush was built for the purpose of having a bon fire in the evening but a slight rain came up and the fire was postponed. A number of the band boys assisted in the work.
