Arrested for Bootlegging
J. J.Matulys, a special agent of
the Government, has been in this
vicinity the past week investigating
the whiskey business.
Saturday he arrested Wm. Porter
and George W. Cox of Siletz on the
charge of introducing whiskey on
the Siletz Reservation.
Wednesday evening Deputy U.
S. Marshal W. B. Griffith arrived
from Portland, and a hearing was
had before United States Commiss
ioner C. II. Gardner. Cox was
found not guilty, and Porter waived
examination and was bound over to
the Federal Grand Jury with bond
fixed at $1000. Attorney C. E.
Hawkins appeared for the defend
ants. The facts in the case are : Mr. Por
ter and Mr. Cox are neighbors re
siding on the Siletz above the
Agency about ' 15 miles. Cox re
sides on a homestead. They came
to Toledo for groceries and other
upplies. Among the supplies they
wanted liquor, and as this town is
dry, Mr. Porter went to Newport
and purchased whiskey for himself
and whiskey brandy and alcohol for
Mr. Cox. He brought it to Toledo
and Cox boxed his liquor with his
groceries and had it hauled to Siletz
by Porter. On the road just this
ide of Siletz Porter was met by Mr.
Matulys who found Porters jug of
whiskey. lie arrested Porter and
drove him on to Siletz where a
icarch was made and Mr. Cox's
liquor was found. All of Cox's
liquor except a quart of alcohol was

Toledo kicked off to Yaquina,
Cronise returning the punt, and
Yaquina getting possession of tin;
ball on Toledo's 10 yard line. By
heavy line smashes through left
guard and tackle, Emmerick, was
sent over the line for a touch down
in the first two minutes of play.
Cronise kicked goal. Cronise made
a successful attempt at a drop kick
for goal from Toledo's 30 yard line,
making the score 10-0 at the end of
the first half. During the last half
neither side scored, most of the
playing being in the center of the
field.
Cronise and Emmerick played
the game for Yapuina, Cronise
punting and tackling and Emmer
lick'a carrying the bail being
features of the game.
For Toledo Goodell at full back
and Weber at left half played good
football. Toledo's lack of team
work and weak interference were
responsible for their being unable
to score Considering the fact that
this was their first game and that
they bad never been together to
practice, it is regarded that the
boys made a good showing.
