Notice is hereby given that the Board of Equalization will meet at the officee of the County Judge, at Toledo, Oregon, on Monday the 19th day of October, 1908, for the purpose of examining and correct ing the 1908 assessment rolls. The law requires that all petitions or applicants for the reduction of a particular assessment shall be made in writing, verified be the oath of the applicant or his attorney, and must be filed with the Board during the First week it is by law re quired to be in session, and any petition or app'ication not so made, verified, and filed shall not be con sidered or acted upon by the Board, and notice is hereby given to each and every taxpayer assessed upon said rolls, that if he fails to appear before said Board, or files with said Board a verified petition, during the rlrst week of its session, he will be unable to obtain relief before the County Court, as the Court will hereafter absolutely refuse to allow any rebate of any taxes paid upon the 1908 tax rolls, for the reason that the law makes the Board of Equalization the proper authority for correcting said rolls. Crawford went to Portland this morning where he will spend the winter. Mrs. T. P. Fish returned Wednes day evening from an extended visit in the East. C. N. Thompson of Waldport was doing business at the county seat Monday. Rev. Rogers returned Friday from conference. He will remain in To ldo another year. E. C. Prescott made a flying trip to Seattle and other Washington cities the first of the week. Misses Ida Hurley and Hester Hill returned Saturday from the hop fields near Independence Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Gildersleve departed this morning for a trip to Portland. They expect to he gone a week. Mrs. Grace Morris of Ilarrisburg arrived Monday evening for a visit with her parents, Sheriff and Mrs. J. H. Ross. Mrs. G. M. McBride of Siletz came over Friday for a visit with Toledo friends. She went to Port land Monday. Mrs. L. Shinar and c'.aujitcrs, Barbara and Katie, arrived Satur day evening from Portland to at tend the funeral -of Mr. Shinar. They returned home Wednesday. George McCaulou was over from Siletz Monday making some fixin's for the sawmill , machinery.' He says the work on .the mill is pro gressing nicely and that they will be ready to start sawing very soon. Mrs. Jennie Ranftof Indianapolis Ind., arrived Monday evening for a visit with her son, G. L. McCaulou, and family. It has boon 17 years since the mother and son have seen each other. Mrs. Ran ft will prob ably remain' here during the winter. The cowardly sneak who poisoned Miss Ruth Ofsteiiahl's dog last week did a thorough job of it. Forty of Mrs. Ofstcdahl's chickens are also dead. A man that would poison another's pet dog is mean enough to take human life if he had the nerve. - ' Mr. and Mrs. Joe Graham after spending the summer on the Bay and at Otter Rock, returned Fri day morning to their home in Kings Valley. They were accom panied by Miss Elizabeth Graham who will spend the winter in the Valley. Taft Club Organized. Pursuant to a call of County Cen tral Committeeman R. H. Howell a meeting was held at the court house last Saturday evening for the purpose of organizing a Taft Club. .The meeting was called to order by Mr. Howell who introduced M r. Mahone, who is in this county for the purpose of assisting in organiz ing Taft Clubs. , Mr. Mahone spoke a few minutes on the political issues and told many plain facts of the workings of the Republican party and the successes of our Mr. Taft. Mr. Mahone is.a forcefull and en tertaining speaker and the audience would have enjoyed listening longer to him. j At the conclusion of Mr. Mahone's speech, the matter of permanent organization of a Club was brought up. On motion R. H. Howell was elected permanent President and G. B. MeCluskey was made permanent Secretary; C. E. Hawkins and Clarence Ofstedahl Vice Presidents, and G. A. Hall Treasurer. Secretary MeCluskey read a con stitution and by-laws, which was adopted by the club. On motion this club joined the State Club to act in conjunction with the latter organization in furthering the Re publican cause in the State. A re cess was then taken that all present desiring to do so could sign the roll as members of the Club. They all joined a'most. School supplies 'at Stewart's. Married. The Carnival. Lincoln County's fruit and vege table carnival in session here is le ing well attended by people from all parts of the county The ex hibits, while not so many as at some previous fairs, are as good and in many instances far excells any exhibits ever before displayed. The largest display from any one locality is that of Chitwood's, which is of great quality and will carry off many prizes. The colt show yesterday afternoon proved interesting. Several entries were made and some fine colts were exhibited. Anflrew Nye carried off the special prize of $10 given by Hall & Anderson for the best colt sired by Mark Hanna. The football game letween Siletz and Toledo High School resulted in a victory for Toledo by a score of 16 to 12. The speeches at' Woodmen Hall last evening delivered by Col. E. Hofer, president of the Willamette Valley Development League, and Hon. Wallis Nash were instructive and entertaining. Both gentlemen are good speakers. The school children's demonstra tion in the afternoon was one of the best features of the carnival.
