The teams are Siletz and Corvallis. They have beaten every team they have played against and this game will decide the championship. Chicago Ladies Fizzle. Manager Anderson informs us that the Chicago Ladies failed to make good with a game here next Sunday. They may come later. North Stars Failed. The North "stars of Salmon River, who were to play the Toledo team here Sunday failed to put in an appearance. However, a scrub game was played in which some real playing and a lot of rag chew ing was enjoyed. It was real in teresting especially the rangling. Siletz 16; Elk City 6. Elk City went to Siletz Sunday for a game with the Indians. The Indians were victorious by the score of 16 to 6. Shoes! Shoes!! Shoes!!! Commissioner John Fogarty was up from Newport Wednesday afternoon, i .A. T, Peterson went to Chehalis, Washington Wednesday. Miss Lena Ball went to Eugene Wednesday morning for a visit. Ted McElwain was a Valleyward passenger Wednesday afternoon. Attorney Middlekauff of Yaquina had business in Toledo Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Trapp of Chitwood were Toledo visitors Wednesday. Miss Mary Duffy of Portland is visiting her friend, Miss Sara Crahen, in this city. Seth Rowe was in town Monday for the first time since breaking his leg several weeks ago. George Mcbride and Frank Gat trell came in from-their homesteads on the Siletz Wednesday. Mrs. Frank Newton is spending the week at Newport with Mrs. B. C. Curry of Oregon City. The Firemen's entertainment at Woodman Hall, Saturday evening, the 15th. Don't forget it. Ned Clark, Carl Davis and Mr. Gray of Upper farm on Siletz visited the county seat Monday and Tues day. Miss Clara Knutson went to Portland Wednesday morning, I called there by the illness of her brother. " t Jas. Hoover and Mr. Turk of Milwaukie, Oregon, came in on the' noon train W'ednesday for a few days outing on the Siletz. - Attorney Ben Jones was up from Otter Rock Tuesday getting" ready ' for the term of Circuit Court to convene here August 15th. j Mrs. C. G. Copeland passed through Tuesday morning enroute to Nortons to visit her son, George Chambers. She was joined here by her daughter, Esther. j Mrs. Morris Senders and daugh-' ter, Lena, of Albany came up from Newport, where they are enjoying an outing, for a day's visit with Mrs. Senders aunt, Mrs. Samuel Center. J. H. C. Montgomery, who has been enjoying a three weeks' vaca tion in Toledo, departed yesterday morning for Eugene. He will re turn in two weeks, at which time he will organize a lodge of Hie Lincoln Annuity Union of which he is Deputy Supreme President. M. N. Anderson sold to J. Marg son of Pool Slough one of the gray horses, thus breaking up one of the best teams in the county. Mr. Margson also contracted to purchase its mate of Mr. Anderson in the Spring, the contract price being $500. County School Superintendent R. P. Goin has been sworn in and took charge, Monday, of the office to which he was elected last June. Mr. Bethers, who has so successfully j conducted the office of School Super-1 intendent of this county for the past twelve years, has turned over j all books, papers, etc., and retired1 to private life. Mr. Bethers with his family will go to Hammond, this state, about September where Mr. Bethers has lcen elected to the principalship of the Hammond schools. They will retain their residence in Toledo, however, and will probably return at the end of the school year next Spring. Super intendent and Mrs. Goin have taken up their residence in this city where Mr. Goin will be ncur his office. Murder and Liquor Cases. Last Friday was a busy day in U. S. Commissioner Charles II. Gardner's court in Toledo. United States Marshal -Griffith and U. S. Deputy Prosecuting At torney Walter Evans came in from Portland Thursday to examine into the murdervof Clayborne White and some liquor cases. The most important of these was the murder case, buspicion havine been placed on Carl Logsdon, one of the three Indians who were with White on the evening of the murder, he was brought in and given a preliminary hearing. Commissioner Gardner after hearing the case decided to bind the prisoner over to the Fed eral Court at Portland. In the case" of the United States vs. Oscar Wood, for taking whiskey on the reservation, Commissioner Gardner also bound him over to the Federal court, fixing his bond for appearance in 8a id Court at $300, which was given and Wood was re leased. The next case was against Stew art Rooney, also charged with tak ing liquor on tho reservation. No case was found against him and he ! was released. Attorney C. E. Hawkins appeared for Logsdon, and Judge Swope de defended Wood and Rooney, U. S. Attorney Evans appeared for the government in all three cases. Commissioner Gardner placed Pete Muggins and; Homer Evans under bonds of eiOOO, each, to ap pear as witnesses in the Logsdon trial. Marshal Griffith departed with Logsdon for Portland Saturday . mornini'. At Sea All Night. The large gasoline launch Rose, which has been carrying passengers from Newport out to pea on daily fishing trips, was caught in the fog Tuesday while outside with forty passengers aboard. The fog came in so dense the captain could not cross in over the bar until 6:15 o'clock the following morning. . Considerable uneasiness was felt for the boat and passengers' safety, and the lifesaving crew and schooner Condor went out to look for the missing boat but the fog was so heavy she could not lw located. The passengers experienced a rough night of it. The cabin on the Rose being too small to accom modate but a very few and a strong wind was blowing. They were a cold, hungry, sleepy and tired bunch when they landed at Newport. Special Chicken Dinner. The Merchants Hotel in this city will serve a Chicken Dinner every Sunday. Thirty-five cents. G rouge Bethers, Sec. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wade returned from Otter Rock Tuesday. William Towner and children of Siletz spent Sunday at Newport. Mr. and Mrs. Shed Roscbrook returned to Portland last Saturday on the noon train. Renus Arnold took a launch load of young folks down to Newport to attend the dance Saturday night. R. A. Bensell was up from New port the first of the week. Valentine Thiel of South Beach is looking after " his property in terests in Toledo: Miss Ina Smith of Albany is visiting her cousin, Merchant R. S. Van Cleve, and family in this city. W. Eugene Knox, the great im" personator and elocutionist, will be in Toledo Saturday, August 15. Don't worry alxmt that dinner Sunday. Go to tho Merchants hotel and get a good chicken din ner. County Commissioner John Ken tta of Siletz, left on the noon train Wednesday on a bunmtjoa tiio to Portland. Wm. Edwards of the Salem Statesman force passed to Newport Wednesday evening for a two weeks' outing. Mrs. J. F. Huntsuckcr was in the city Tuesday afternoon. She re turned to her home at Yaquina on the evening train. Miss Eva Meld rum who visited here last week with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Newton, returned to her home at Oregon City. E. C. Giltner, Secretary of the Portland Commercial Club, passed through last Saturday enroute for an outing at the coast. William Toner, the baggage man on the C. & E., was up from Ya quina Monday. Mr. Toner is tak ing a two months' vacation. Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Weatherford of Albany came over Saturday and went over to the Siletz. They re turned Sunday afternoon and took the evening excursion train for home. Drs. Adams tho well known Port land dentists have taken up their permanent residence at Newport. They came through from" P rtlard last Saturday. Heretofore Mr. and Mrs. Adams have spent the month of August at Newport for several years past, but are now permanent ly located there. Lincoln county is fortunante in having these first class dentists locate here. Dr. Humberstone, formerly of this place, has decided to locate in Eastern Oregon and will not return to Toledo. Rev. E. F. Zimmerman, field secretary of the Anti Saloon League, Portland, Oregon, will be at Toledo Saturday and Sunday, August 15th and 1G. He desires to meet all in terested in temperance from various points of tho county for the puriHiso of organizing a County Temperance League, for the better promotion of the temperance cause, at Toledo, Saturday, August 15, at 1:30 p. m. Mr. and Mrs. R. Reginald DePoc arrived .Wednesday afternoon from Lawrence, Kansas, for a visit among relatives and friends at Siletz. Mr. DiP.e is musical director of the Haskell Indian Band at Lawrence. This is the next largest and lest Indiifn band in the world. Mr. and Mrs. DoPoe like Eastern Kansas but say they are glad to get back home and get a breath of cool sea breeze and ho "where they, will not have to watch for cyclones. Thev will remain a month. Fruit and Vegetable Carnival. Lincoln county will hold a fruit and Vegetable Carnival at Toledo on October 7, 8, and 9th. At tl e regular meeting of the Toledo De velopment league it was decided to hold a county fair this fall and a committee was appointed to arran; e for same. The committee met and appointed Bub-committes, and at the special meeting of the league Wednesday evening the action of the general committee was approved . The committees are already busy and with the co-operation of all the carnival will be a success.
