James Schoolcraft Sherman, who
was nominated by the republican
national convention for the vice
presidency, is a lawyer, a resident
of Utica, N. Y., and president of
the Utica Trust & Deposit Company.
He was born in Utica, Octoler 24,
1855, graduated from Hamilton
College in 1S87, and received the
degree of L, L. D. in 1903. He
was admitted to the bar in 1880,
was elected mayor of Utica in 1884,
was chairman of the New York
tate republican convention in 1895
and 1900. He entered congress
from the Twenty-third New York
District in 1887, serving till 1891,
served from the Twenty-fifth New
York District from 1893 to 1903,
jmd was elected in 1903 from the
Twenty-seventh District, to serve
until 1909.

atmosphere was clear and the ves
sels were so close in shore the men
on board could be easily seen. For
some unaccountable reason the big
fleet as they passed this point going
north on May 22 could not come in
closo onough to be seen, as had been
promised they would. But we are
satisfied. Everybody got a view of
the smoke from the fleet as they
went north, and some of us were
fortunate onough to see the torpedo
boats Saturday, so thore is no kick
coming wouldn't help matters to
kick, anyway.
A stoekbuyer went up near Elk
City the other day to look at some
porkers which one of our farmers
wanted to dispose of. The buyer
liked the hogs only they wore a
little light in weight, and he also
wanted to know what made the
hogs race across the field so often.
The farmer in a hoarse whisper ex
plained that ho had always called
the hogs to, feed them, but that he
look cold and lost his voice, and
then got in the habit of pounding
on the fence with a stick, and now
