Glines has been spend ing a few days at Toledo in the in terest of the road to Tidewater. Although this road was started years ago, there are still several miles of road to le completed before any very great use can lie made of the part that is now complete. Supt. A large whale lias lieen floating around in Alsea Bay for the last three weeks. It appears to have been dead for some years and has the habit of reposing a few days in each place. For nearly a week it lay directly in front of (apt. Nice's place, much to the disgust of the Captain. , It is now on the south side almost in front of Mr. Keady s home. Towever, there is plenty of drift wood at hand and if it becomes thoroughly fastened to any one place the residents will turn out in a laxly and cremate the remains. , This week finishes the present school term and an entertainment has been prepared for Friday even ing. The band has I wen invited to provide the music and have accepted the invitation. The Waldport Marine Band is planning a trip over the county in the near future. Should their plans hold good, Newport, Toledo and Nashville will be visited and if pos sible Siletz will be remembered. Ocean View. A terrible shipwreck occured here in sight of our school house. We have not learned the name of the vessel, but it was a steam schoo ner loaded with lumber. ; The accident happened Saturday night about 10 o'clock. There was a heavy squall on and the boat drift.r ing in struck ,a rock and was torn almost to atoms. The' men on board launched the ' life boats and jumped into them. But before they could get away from the ship's side a gigantic sea struck the ship, that parted the deck chains and threw the deck load on top of the unfortunate men in the water. One man Andrew J. Neilson rode on some lumber and ' succeeded in reaching . the shore torn, bruised and with a broken leg started to crawl toward a house. He was found Sunday morning by Andrew Wisniewski. The neighbors seeing so much lumber on the bench began a search for Ijodies as they were sure of a wreck. They found two bodies and sent to Newport for the lifesavinr crew, who started at once for the scene. They found one lifelniat with nine men in it and brought them in. There are still eleven men missing. It is supposed they were all killed by the lumber. ' There is enough lumber scattered along the beach to build seyeral good houses. Ocean View will have a basket social and literary program on the 15th. Every lady in the country is requested to come ami bring a basket hnd help swell the funds for a blacklxiard, maps and other apa ratus needed in the school. Dr. Minthorn was called to see Lawrence Shinar Sunday. Law rence is having a very serious time. Mr. Joe Sijota , will meet the county court this week and urge the necessity of a dyke at this end of the bay. - . Walter Bones, wife and daugh ter are the guests of Mrs. Trudie M. Bones this' week.' ' A. Itidgiewski went to Newport last Wednesday and brought back his niece Miss ..Stefano. She will enter school . at once, 'in order to learn the English language. ' ? to I?
