Krogstad. ' "Jayhawkers of '49" The Death Valley. Magazine, whicU is publishing the. life of Death Valley Scotty, will begin ,the story of the "Jayhawkers of '49" in its M.iy number. The "Jayhawkers" dihc ivered and gave Death Valley its name. The story will lie written by John B. Colton, one of the sur vivors who is now 75 years of age. He was the youngest member of the party, being 16 years old at the time.. April 5, 18 19, the party, consist ing of 36 members, organized at Galcslmrg, Ills., under the name of Jayhawkers," and started to the gold fields of California. They were on foot the lrwt 52 days of the trip, having ak.nd; lied their wagons and butchered thesr .oxen for food. There are four survivors, one a woman aged 94 years, who carried a child upon her back and keep in line wLile strong men fell dead or went intr.ne upon tho trail. All of the story will be told for the first time, the humorous as well as the pathetic. Publishers have sought it for 50 years, but the sur yivors have now deemed it proper nnd fit to give it to the Death Val ley Magazine. No pioneer or lover of American history can afford to miss it.
