Every procrty holder and every citizen of the state of Oregon is in debted to the newspapers, the com mercial bodies, the schools and the business men for conducting an ad vertising campaign tliroiiurh 1007 which v brought 27,215 people to this state as a result of the colonist rate in March and April, Septem lx;r and October. v No greater returns has ever been achieved as a result of community organization and co-operative ad vertising. This record of 227 peo ple for every day for 120 days is almost without a parallel in the history of immigration effort any where in this country. During the same months of 190(5 the colonist rates brought 18,214, showing the unprecedented increase of 9,001, or in round figures 50 per cent. The colonist rates go into effect again on March 1st, and continue until April 80th, and if the same energetic campaign can be carried on in 190S, even this large influx of new people can be increased, and it is certainly worth while, j The direct benefit of the colonist rate is that it brings people to every sect it n, and, builds up the country around all the towns rather than increasing the population of the larger cities. And it has been con clusively proven, that immigration conies to communities in direct pro i portion to the effort expended by ithem. During the winter months, Janu ary and February particularly, the farmer in the great Middle West ! (from whence comes our greatest immigration) does Ins greatest read ing, and we want to be sure that he j reads the story of Oregon. During , the past year more than five million , copies of printed matter were circu lated from this state, and in all of these the special rate has been prom inent. J It has been the constant effort of of the Portland Commercial Club in its correspondence throughout the state to impress upon all the people of Oregon that this low fare applies to all points the same as to Port land, and in all advertising this fact has been emphasized. I Immediate organization should ;be commenced everywhere byr the commercial bodies and through the schools. Oregon needs no one thing more than additional popula tion. j The Oregon Press Association closed Saturday night one of the most profitable meetings in its his- , tory. ; Never were better apples displayed in the world than those shown at the "All Oregon Fruit Show!' last week. An Illinois congressman has struck upon a, happy plan of providing am ple internal revenue with which to run the government from year to year without drawing on any of "its other resources. Ilia scheme is to tax heiresses one-fourth the fortune they would carry across the waters to bestow upon the penniless no bility they marry for a title. If Congressman Sabath can get this measure through, his name will be entitled to the top position in the hall of fame.
