The same glad note of progress new buildings, new people comes from many sections. Great interest is manifested i n tbe Oregon Irrigation Association at Grants Pass this week. Tbe Oregon State Fair at Salem gives assurance of being tbe best ever held. There is a disposition here to make "Portland Day" Sept. 19th a greater success lrom the standpoint of attendance than ever before. The advertising habit has cer tainly struck Oregon. Almost very bank, business house and factory in Portland and throughout the State are distributing leaflets in their correspondence. Secretary Taft's reception by the Oregon Development League broke all records. Many people went to the Armory as early as six o-clock. The entire State was represented upon the platform and in the audi ence by well known Oregonians, and all of them have abetter under standing of the Panama Canal than ever before. The. noted Kikujiro Ishii, Chief oi the Japanese Bureau of Foreign Commerce, was recently entertai ned here and 'took pains to say that war between his country aud the United States was impossible. Both the wheat and the hop crop were much less injured by rain than was at first reported. A Tillamook cheese is on display here which weighs 356 pounds and represents the product for one day of 190 cows. It will be cut and sold at retail for Thanksgiving. Travel is enormous. Many fam-J ilies are eoming to the State and for mauy hours during tbe day the Union Station shows an activity similar to that witnessed at a great national convention. ihey are ticketed for all points throughout he state ad this travel will con tinue until the close of the colonist rates, October"3tst. The Country Club & Live Stock Association have bought a site for their home and work will begin at once. Portland artists are to be con gratulated upon, securing better photographs of Secretary Taft than have ever been taken before. None of bis pictures in the Eastern papers compare with those printed here, and pictures made here will ' be used by the correspondents who accompany the Secretary from this time forward. The Manufacturers' Record, of Baltimore, the leading industrial paper of the south, devotes two pages to Portland and the North' west in a recent issue. The Sat urday Evening Post will discuss the same subject in its issue of Sat urday, September 21st. For Sale. , Bay horse nine years old, weight 11 hundred. K. Bubch, Glen, Or.
