Unsophisticated Mary.
Toledo, Oregon, has the honor of pro
(lacing the greenest servant girl yet on
record, and the experience which the
family of J. Adrian Epping hud with
this particular Mary puts the old story
about the girl who served the tomatoes
undressed away below par. In making
a change in servants Mrs. Epping re
quested the one who was leaving to
remain a day or so aud break in the
new girl, who seemed to be quite un
sophisticated. Mary was accordingly
instructed how to conduct the house
hold duties and seemed deeply inter
ested as each item was explained to her.
"Come, Mary, aud I'll show you how
to order the oysters for lunch," said
the retiring maid. '"I will telephone
for them." Mary gazed with opened
eyed wonder at Susan talking into the
telephone but could not doubt the
reality of it as she heard all the conver
sation, but. wlipn they were through
talking she excitedly inquired : "And
now, Susan, shall I run and get a dish
to catch 'em in?" Oregonian, Feb. 25.

Mrs. Harry K. Thaw is still on trial
tor killing Stanford White by proxy.

caged not longer than six months. The
trial has been in progress six weeks,
and the above guess Is the popular one.
John W. Kolley of the Portland Tele
gram stuff brands the late State Senate
us all right, but dishonest, while Daua

House as honest, but not all right. By
tjieir combined efforts these pencil
pushers have put the Legislature in the
ljst of calamities, side-stepping occa
sionally to toss a few tiny bouquets.
They don't seem to appreciate the fact
that the Legislature was composed
principally of ''people's choice" states
men the very pick of Oregon. Their
criticism is not in order.
Attached to one of Governor Cham
berluiu's numoroua vetoes was this bit
of sage advice : "Care should be taken
in raining laws so that the uninitiated
can discover his duties as a citizen
without the aid of an expert lawyer,
In other words, the Governor is one of
tho "uninitiated," and not an "expert
lawyer," as he is popularly supposed to
be. Our lawmakers should indite their
hills in words of que syllable, and at
lacu to each a pocket dictionary.
