"The law restricting fie hint? to tide water lias done everything for the coast streams," gays Master Fish War den Van Dnsen, in his December report to the Board of Fish Commissioners. - In the season of 1901 the total number of pounds of salmon of nil kinds tnken was 4.371,618. The report for the sea son of 190(1 is 8,430,005. The Chinook product, shows a gain of 300 per cent ' over'1001.' ' Of the 21 ,fG2,100 spawn taken at the several coast st.inam hatcheries during UtOG, 4,135,000 are credited to Yaquiua. The five Columbia River hatcheries report 1-1,052,000 more, making a grand total of 30,314,100. ' It has been clearly demonstrated that the salmon industry will continue to grow in importance with- the mainten ance aud installing of hatcheries. Notice to Bidders. John Boone, a former well-known citizen of Lincoln county, was drowned on the 4t.li inst. in a stream near Lee, Coos county. John was in a boat with our oilier men who were engaged in breaking a logjam. The boat was over turned in t tie rapids and. John Was drowned, the other men succeeding in reaching shore. The river was out of lis bunks at the time and very rapid, making the search for the body almost hopeless. Some Furniture Left. Glenn Gillette of Hood River visited his sisters, Mrs. Ed Stanton and Miss Hattie Gillette, Sunday and Monday. Miss Mamie Wakefield of Chitwood attended the joint installation of the W. R. C. and G. A. li. Post Tuesday evening. George Sylvester and D. S. Young of Newport are in the city todav and will remain tonight to assist in installing the officers of the local Oddfellows. Mrs. C. E. Hawkins returned Wednes day evening from Portland, where she attended a business meeting of the Board of Managers of the Y'onien of Woodcraft. County Surveyor Jim Derrick arrived home this morning from Otter Rock where he has been staking some lots for parties who are interested in this future great summer resort. George McCaulou has purchased and moved his family into the Dr. Thayer residence on the north' side. Mrs. Allen Parker and family, have moved into the Fif.li residence vacated by Mr McCaulou. ' Mr. and Mrs. Ira Reeder of Ashland passed through yesterday evening for a visit with Ira's brother Jesse and family at Yaquina. It is the bridal toar of the Ashland couple, who were married at Ashland last Sunday. T. R. Stokes and H. C. Jurgensen of Portland, members of Toledo's new sawmill Arm, were in the city the fore part of tbe week. ' They returned to Portland Wednesday, accompanied by George McBride and G. L. Gray. Sheriff Ross returned Monday from the, Tillamook county coast, where ho assisted in the search for Ade Crosno. W. W. Soule left Tuesday to join the searching party, from which no word has beep received for several days. Siletz Items. We are very glad to soo our citizens coming home to the happy huntiiiK ground. Jack West of Upper Farm has moved down to the Agency to work for John hentta. We see that Mrs. W'. Harris is back at the Agency after au absence of four months. . Henry Davenport ' of Lona Prairie wont to Salem Indian School for a while on account of'his health. Mr. Marcy, a friend and ' neighbor, of the Upper Farm is very sick and wo all have hopes of his speedy recovery! Joshley Brown of the Agency has a very sick child. Citizen John is acting ps doctor in the place of Doctor Orton.- JJavo Adams is now moving to his homestead on Rock Creek, but Mrs. Adams is still employed at the school as lauudrass. .Mosio Miuuley of Rock Creek, who weighs 203 pounds, is sick in bed, but he claims he has not dreamed of the happy hunting ground w here the good Indians go. Tbe weather has been pretty fair sinco the 18tb, but we still have snow on the ground ou the north side of the hills, aud it has kept the stock near home Bince the 1 1th . Once again the old soldiers have met and encouraged each other to bravely take up the work for another year. As we listened to their patriotic talk, their plea to the youth of our ctm munity to love the Old Flag like thev love it. we thought, while their ranks are so few, yet the work they are ac complishing is so great. Such talk has the power to stir the very best motives within us, and help us to try and live the life of a true citizen, and be worthy of their great sacrifice. The hall was beautifully decorated. receiving complimentary remarks from our guests, who assured us they had a a pleasant time.
