Dan Hurley came in Monday from Albany, where he is running a board ing house, fora visit with his folks. The Toledo Creamery paid to farmers of this locality for cream during the month of June over $1500 not a small item. Several creameries of this ca pacity should be doing business in the county. A team composed of Toledo and Cor allis ball players had a contest with the Siletz team Sunday on the local grounds. The Tpledo-Corvallis team won by a score of 20 to 9. Simpson pitched for Toledo, a." usual, but his receiver was Chambers, the crack little Corvallis player. They made a fine battery. The Si lei t boys' battery was not in the best kiud of working order. A large crowd witnessed the game. And it was Sunday. R. 0. Social. The social given at Woodmen Hall Tuesday night by Abe Lincoln Wo man's Belief Corps No. 49 was patron ized to the extent of only a little more than one-half the refreshments pre pared for the occasion, but it was a pleasant affair, just the same. The ladies disposed of the unsold ice cream next dav. - . Otto Krogstad's phonoeraph figured m the brief musical program, there being also a couple of choice vocal se lections. Samuel Center's rendition of "Robert Emmet's Plea" was a finished bit of dramatic work, of which the audience showed a warm appreciation. Otto Krogstad read a prize poem which touched the funny bone of the audience, although it didn't seem to stampede the boys very hard in the direction of the ico cream, which was evidently its design. The fascinating and polished games of "Pit" and "Bingo" served as time- killers for nwhile. The former is highly endorsed by 'way-up medical men and will undoubtedly become popular in Toledo. The proceeds of the social go to swell the Cottage fund of the Soldiers' Home at Roseburg. Unfinished Business. At the hour of going to press the grand jury had not completed its work. However, a straight tip has been re ceived from Albany and Corvallis that the jury has decided that the accused in the Sharratt murder case are not guilty. The jury is expected to report within a few hours perhaps sooner. The jury huug in the Gust Olson Swiping case aud it (the case) will be put in cold storage until next term of circuit court. The newspapers of Portland, Albany, Salem and Corvallis have been busy this week trying the Sharratt murder case and they all seem to be of one opinionnamely, that the defendants are just about the nicest persons on earth and very innocent. One report sent to the Oregon ian from Toledo, stating that "the examining magis trate" (W. R. Waketleld) informed the grand jury, by letter, that he also be lieved the defendants to be innocent, but he committed them just because or words to that effect. Just ho'.v this correspondent learned this is not known. The defendants' attorneys may possibly know something about it, but there is no law compelling them to squeal on themselves. At the Hotels.
