' The East needs an introduction to the Middle West. Both the East, and Middle West need an introduction to the Far West. ' That introduction is going to be made, both formally and informally you may tnko your choice this yeBr, and the Lewis and Clark Exposition at Portland, Oregon, is going to be the introducer. This Ex pobition, which will open June 1, will be useful in many way9, but in uo way will it be more useful to Americans than in making the far-divided Rections of this great country acquainted with each other. What does the man who lives in Portland, Maine, for instance, know about the man whose home is at J'orilaud, Oregon? The Exposition at Portland will bring together both ends and the middle and make them mutually acquainted. The East ought to knpw more about the West than tho West knows about the East, for Easterners travel in the West more than Westerners travel in the East ; but somehow these touring Enst trners do not seem to diffuse their knowledge of the West when they re turn home. Or perhaps the home . ftayiug Easterners refuse to believe what .their travel-wise neighbors tell them of the West, beoause some of their tales appear unbelievable to the conservative Easterner. t tlio. ntl.ni. ' tin... I t I A T.- -. I earned a mighty misconception of the West by placing credouce in ta'es en tiroltoo tall tor the proper stature of truth and veracity. The "wild and woolly" West is the only West which much of the East wots of. The tamed and tranquil West they refuse to be lievo iu, and they entertain also, in some quarters, a notion that the West is incapable of coinplote civilization. , It is rehited that a Boston woman who visited St. Louis Inst year was amazed to learn that the telephone vfaa in general use throughout that city. What will be her astonishment to find iu Portli.nd not only the telephone that talks, but the telephone that sees? M the Lewis and Clark Exposition a de vice whereby one talking through a telephone may see the reflected feut ures of the person at tho other and of the line will be exhibited in practical operation for the first time in public: tud strange to state it is the inven tion of a Portland man. The East and the West will become acquainted at Portland. This will clear up many misconceptions ou each side and will serve the stronger to cement the several sections of our land. An Editor's Opinion of the Royal Gorge. Edyth Tozier Wealherred, in describ ing a recent trip over the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, says in "The Expo sition : , "At last the goal of the ambition of years has been reached marvelous, wonderful, grand and inspiring Roval Gorge is on either hand. The only dis appointing thing is you only have one pair of eyes, while the . train darts in and out of the tremendous chasm. If any who have never seen it are wonder ing how it looks just go and see. Thousands have tried to describe it, yet every attempt falls short of giving the subject justice." If you contemplate a trip East, write W. C. Mc Bride, 121 Third street, Port land, Ore., for booklets picturing Colo rado's famous scenery, aud any other in formation you may desire. Why Suffer From Rheumatism. Why suffer from rheumatism when one application of Chamberlain's Pain Balm will relieve the pain? The quick relief this liniment affords makes rest and sleep possible, and that alone is worth many times its cost. Many who have used it hoping only for a short re lief from suffering have been h,iii.;i surprised to find that after a while the relief became permanent. Mrs. V. II. Leggett of Yum i'um, Tennessee, U. s! A., writes: "I am a great sufferer from rheumatism, all over from head to foot, and Chamberlain's Pain Ilalm is the only thing that will relieve the pain."
