improving.
Otis DeLaurier has constructed a
new approach to his residence. It does
not present as level an appearance us it
might, but is very convenient.

An Oyster City Event.
The social dance given at Oyster city
last' Friday night was a grand success,
the main feature being a prize waltz.
The prizes were: first ludy, hand mir
ror; first gentleman, uecktie, which
were won by Mr. Cox aud Mrs.Ilunlon.
Mr. Glass of Toledo gave the prizes.
Second gentleman, silk handkerchief;
second lady, box of paper and envel
opes. Won by George Lewis and Mrs.
King. Prizes given by Frank Lane of
Newport. Third gentleman, meer
schaum pipe; third lady, bottle of per
fume. Wou by B. N. King aud Miss
Ryan. Given by Stewart & Vant of
Toledo. Fourth, cash prize, given by
the managers of the dance, and pompa
dour comb, givea by Hemy Lewis of
Toledo. Wou by Mr. Ryan and Miss
Hnutsucker.

All nature responds gleefully to the

aud while crops of all kinds mature
Mowly and, therefore, fully, through
the long summer season, the woods re
flect the helpful climatic influences also,
and trees and t-h rubs of all kinds ex
hibit a luxuriant growth not to bo seen
in any other part of the United States.
In riding throneh the country at this
time of year au unequaled panorama
presents itself at every turn in the
road. A picture taken at one point in
tlio country road will bear no resem
blance to one taken at a point not 50
yards distant from the first, aud this
caiibe repeated with endless variety
all averagiug so high in magnificent
diversity as to make of the Willamette
valley a veritable picture gallery, whose
every exhibit proclaims iNature to De
the enthusiastic artist.
And all these characteristics, to he
observed everywhere In this part of the
state, will be especially noticeable in
the Lewis and Clark grounds next year.
Those who have been so fortunate as to
visit the Park in Portland will recall
the great variety of native trees which
grow in such endless profusion. This
characteristic of the park will be a
pleasing feature of the Lewis and Clark
grounds, with the added attraction of a
panorama more elaborately beautified,
and which is not to be compared for a
moment with the location and natural
surroundings of any other exposition
ever held in the United States.
In the woods adjacent to the Cham-
poeg monument on Monday a party of
visitors noted growiug on a flat of
ground no larger than an ordinary
dooryard beautiful specimens of red
fir, alder, willow, ash, laurel, cedar,
dogwood, oak. hazel, Kerviceberry, vine
maple, hard maple, wild currant with
its scarlet flowers in full bloom, black
berry vines climbing over decaying
logs, and strawberry blossoms here and
there struggling for supremacy with
the luxuriant grass.

over again, as a background for 15C0

of exultation seemed to proclaim l.io

were enabled to appreciate what it Is to
oe citizens oi the most magnificent
commonwealth in the Uniou.
