As Senator Fulton's friends have con Jiiler1.lv predicted, Oregon's junior member of the upper house is making himself heard in behalf of his state. The following special from Washington to the Oregonian', under date of Novem ber (i, illustrates his earnestness and ability : At the Kolicitation of Senator Fulton 1 'resident Kootevelt has interested himself in the public land situation in OreKOD, and promises to see to it that there is an adjustment of the adminis tration of the forestry bureau and of the Interior Department which will be Batisfuctory to the people of Oregon. During a prolonged conference at the White House today, Senator Fulton fully explained the publio land situation in his Btate, emphasizing the fact that the development of many counties has Iibhii materially and needlessly re tarded by the reckless withdrawal of lands for forest reserve purposes'. He also explained the embaras6ment iu which hundreds of entrymen have been placed by the over-zealous and unjustifi able methods that have been adopted by the department iu requiring proof on timber and even homestead entries made in recent months. The Senator made it quite plain that the public land situation in Oregon is fast approaching a crisis and decisive remedial action is necessary to restore confidence and irood feeling among the people. He said that while Oregon, as a whole, indorses the forest reserve polioy, its people do not want all the raluable lands included wilhin reserves, nor do they like to have settlers and those seeking to become settlers humiliated by tho appersion that they are at tempting to make fraudulent entries, when in fact they are acting in good faith. After his conference Senator Fulton .-aid lie felt confident the prevaleut abuses would be remedied, as the i-reB-ident intends U take the matter up with the proper officers and insist upon a return to conservatism, not only in forestry matters, but in regard to all forms of public land entries. This probably means that before long a large amount of the area now with drawn will be restored to entry and there will be a let-up in the ridiculous catechism through which entrymen are now put whenever they attempt to prove up on their claims. The assessment roll of Clackamas county represents J9.000.000 and the lelinqtiont roll does not excoed $4000. This could not possibly be the case were Hon. GARRISON, Box 335, FOREST GROVE, OREGON George Eighmy, traveling passenger agent of the Great Northern, from Buf falo N. Y., was in Portland yesterday. It wa9 Mr. Eighmy's first visit to Ore gon and be expressed himself as agree ably surprised to find the evidence of devlopment and industry that he saw here. "The people of the East," said he, "have an entirely erroneous idea of the West. They have been led to be lieve that tbia country is the wild and wooly home of the Indian and cowboy. The great trouble is that the resources and opportunities of this great district have not been properly advertised among the Eastern people. They have not had an opportunity to become ac quainted with the conditions here and of course look upon the West as a rather bad place to come. The Lewis and Clark Fair will, I believe be a darw ing card that will cause people to come to this district and see for themselves what the opportunities are. You need but to get the people here and they will be favorably impressed with ttte country. The overcrowded East has many people that would be glad to get a home some where else, and if they can be brought to realize the resources of this country, they will no doubt come in this di rection." Oregonian. Panama;, the new republic, is rather a tender plant aud may find it necessary some day to appeal to Uncle Sam for protection possibly for annexation. Much to the credit of the leading foreign nations is the fact that they re gret the recent victory of Tammany in New York.
