A large audience attended the session of the Teachers Institute at the court houso last night, which was really a first-class entertainment. 'I he opening number was a vocal duet by Mrs. May bel Betliers and Miss Verna Koss. As usual, these local favorites were well received. Prof F. D. Haroun followed with a vocal solo, the clsmg number being a vocal solo by Sheriff Ross. Each musical number was vigorously encored. It is seldom that so much of a good thing spices an evening's enter tainment. Prof. E. D. Ressler's lecture, "The School in it's relation to the Fam ily, the Church and tbe State," was a pleasing, scholarly paper, containing valuable suggestions. The address by Prof. TIaroun on "That Bad Boy and that Bad Girl" appealed strongly to the parents and young teachers present, who will certainly treasure the rich grist of "pointers." The Institute will close tonight', at the courthouse. State Superintendent J. H. Ackerman is down for an address, which will, of course, be an intellectual treat. By the way, don t forget the Wood men Carnival at Corvauis June, JU 11, 12 and 13. It will be a long time be fore the people of Lincoln county will iiave an opportunity to see anything of tbe kind so near home and at so little expense. He sagely repeats the ad- ice of 1892 to make Tariff reform the issue, as if nothing had happened dur ing the past twelve years. With Mr. Cleveland, Tariff reduction Is the sa cred solvent for everything. He can think of no sacrifice too great for the nation to make to secure Tariff reform. He seems to have genius for curing the "evils" of prosperity. Well, he cer tainly has demonstrated that his doc trine will do this. He did it success fully in 1893, and if the people will only give him a chance he will do it again in 1904. For curing the evils of prosperity, demand foj labor, high Wajiaa iijj cXtuiisiOii of business, lib can be trusted to produce results every time. Guuton'B Magazine. There will be no Tariff tinkeriug iu 1903-4; there will be no Calamity Tariff in 1905. The enemies of tbe American system are welcome to enjoy the bain ful precedents of 1893-0. The Ameri can public are not. dating economic legislation from 1394; they prefer the gait that was struck in tub year 1897, when something struck Calamity in the enactment of the Diugley Tariff. Bosh fooled the folks in 1893; but you cannot fool most of the people twice with tbe same article. A veneer of mush and molasses does not make bosh more pal atable.
