The social at the Indian training
school Saturday eveniug, March 7, in
honor of Major J. J. McKoin's arrival
and as a farewell to Superintendent
and Mrs. D. D. McArthur, who left for
Fort Mojave, Arizona, Sunday after
noon, was one of the most successful
and pleasant affairs of the Reason. The
seats had been removed from the
schoolroom and the building was well
filled by pupils aud guests by 8 p. m.
The first uumber on the program was a
quartet by Mrs. Bryant, MissKruger,
Messrs. Arthur Bensell and Warren
Hall. Next was an instrumental solo
by Mrs. Bryant. This was followed by
an instrumental duet by Mrs. Bensell
and Mr. Gates, vocal solos by Misses
Esther Copeland, Cecile Clay and Mrs.
Bensell and an instrumental duet by
Miss Krnger aud Mrs. Bryant. The
closing uumber wbs a quartet by Mes
dames Bensedl and Bryant and Messrs.
Towner and Bensell. All of these
numbers were excellent and merited
the' applause tendered them. Tho last
number was enthusiastically encored.
Major McKoin was introduced, and his
maiden speech in Siletz was very good.
His sociabiality and courteousness was
in evidence during the evening, and
every effort will be made by our good
people to have him feel at home among
us. Duncan D. McArthur's remarks to
tho school and peoplewore very appro
priate. In the girls' parlors games and
social chat occupied the time until
supper was announced. Your corre
spondent enjoyed this feature of the
entertainment as well as any, espe
cially the chicken salad, orange cake,
etc. Everyone enjoyed it. The dining
room was tastefully decorated in
orango and green. Miss Kruger is an
artist in this line. Mrs. Haller and all
thoso who in any way contributed
tow ards the success are to bo congratulated.
