When the state legislature has finished the work of the session, Oregon will have a fish and gan-,e law guaranteed to remain in full force and effect for fit least a year. . Germany will soon have twice as many warships as the United States, but will still be shy a Dewey, a Schley, a Clarke to say nothing of our world-walloping "man behind the gun." -There isn't a doubt about it. The ship subsidy bill is a good thing for the grafters. "Grafters," by the way, is an over-worked, abom inable word, but Ln.tc!siuit.u'y serves as a short cut to the objective point. If Prof. Tesla has received any news from Venus or Mars receutly he's keeping it to himself. Per haps a senatorial deadlock is on up there, and consequently "news are scarce" as the college graduate would say. A telegram from San Francisco says our friend Pat Crowe "is sup posed to be" hiding somewhere on the Pacific coast. The trail seems to be getting warmer. Pat was "supposed to be" in England about a week ago. With the primary system in vogue and United States senators elected by direct vole, several would-be statesmen in Oregon would soon see themselves as others see them. The time is not far dis tant when big sacks and senatorial deadlocks will cease to give the helpless majorily that tired feeling. There is no change in the sena torial situation at Salem. II. W. Corbett, according to the Oregon ian, is in the race to stay, and if the other candidates are in the same humor as they have a right to be "there will be one vacant chair" in the UnUed States senate. How ever, it is altogether probable that some day there'll be a stampede to some more or lefs dark horse. Mrs. Carrie Nation, the celebrated Kansas saloon smasher, has proven that in the hands of woman the hatchet is mightier than the ballot. However, it is to be hoped Mrs. Nation's methods of fighting King Alcohol will not become popular. If every woman who is opposed to saloons should perform in that manner the spectacle would head t ff the greatest pen artist on earth. In the language of the poet: "Don't ' let your angry passions rise, but fix a place for them to lay in." The Newpoit News accuses a correspondent of Tim Luadkr of "attempting to injure or besmirch the good name of Hon. II. V. Corbett." If our correspondent has made one statement concerning Mr. Corbett that is not true, he will offer n public apology, and not 'over a uom de plume, either. The ai tide in question is devoted in the main to the past political history of Oregon, ruid is no more an injustice to Mr. Corbett than were a few re marks made by the Newport News last July. Hut this controversy is UH'lcis and tiresome. Nothing that can be said by the News, The Luadkr or any. reader w ho may "take his pen in hand" will either elect or defeat Mr. Corbett. Un fortunately United States senators are not made by the people. Roseburg'5 Rara Avis. The Roseburg Review isn't satisfied with Governor Geer's appointments ou the school-book commission. The gov ernor is uufortunate. It would be a big feather in his headgear if he could da something that would please The Re view. Toledo Leader. The asstoQt editor of the Review has evidently been the victim of a sweet dream, in which he found himself giving entire satisfaction as governor of the great state of Ore gon. Anybody can see that he wants Governor Geer's job. Oregon at the Pan-American. Portland, Ore., Jan. 26, igox.
