HYPNOTISM AND PUQfLISM.

tomer When Under the Influence.
One of the most remarkable cases oJ
hypnotism, yet reported Is attracting
the attention of medical men here, says
the Baltimore Sun. The victim, too,
for a time made things lively for about
twenty persons who were attending a
tea in the West End last evening. The
Bcene of the singular actions of the vic
tim of hypnotism was at the residence
of W. J. Oilman, No. 1)22 West Marsh
all street. The subject of the hypno
tists was John Sweeney, the son of e
well-known livery man.
During the evening It was suggested
as an additional means of entertain
ing the guests that some one be hypno
tized. Young Sweeney, who Is quite
a powerful young man, offered his serv
ices, and was soon under the Influence
of a young operator named Cook. In a
few moments It was seen that the young
man was completely under Cook's In
fluence. The company became annoy
ed and suggested that the spell be
broken and the victim released. This
was attempted, but In vain. The young
man cut up all sorts of antics. In his
efforts to release his patient the opera
tor was terribly slugged and several
of his front teeth knocked out. Sweeney
manifested wonderful feats of strength.
At times hnlf a dozen or more men at
tempted tit seize and bind him, but
could not do so. The services of a stal
wart policeman were called upon. When
lie got withinreach of tbe latter's fist
he received a 'terrific blow, which sent
him spinning away more than twenty
feet. Sweeney, under the peculiar In
fluences, appeared to Imagine himself
a prize-tighter, and for a time It was
well that few disputed this point with
him.
A physician was finally summoned,
and after a long struggle the young
man was handcuffed. He was removed
to a hospital for treatment. Sweeney
remained In a stupor until the iiex'
morning about 8 o'clock.
GRATEFUL FOR A KIND ACT.
How nn Indl in Rewarded a Man Who
Rendered Him a Service.
In "Travels In New England and Nev
York" President. Dwlght of Yale Col
lege tells a good story of Indian wit
and friendship.
In the early days of Litchfield, Conn.,
nn Indian called at the tavern and ask
ed the landlady for food, frankly stat
ing that he had no money with which
to pay for It. She refused him harshly,,
but a whlto man who sat by uoted the
red man's half-famished state and of
fered to pay for his supper.
The meal was furnished and the In
dian, bis hunger satisfied, returned to
the fire and told his benefactor a story.
"You know the Bible?" said the red
skin. The man assented.
I "Well." said the Indian, "the Bible
say, Clod made world, and then he took
him and look at hi in and say, 'He good,
very good.' He made light and he took"
bim and look nt him and say, 'He good,
very good." Then he made dry land
and water and sun and moon and grass
and trees, and took him and look at
him and say, 'He good, very good. Then
lie made beast and birds and fishes,
and took him and look at lilni and say,
'He good, very good.'
"Then lie made man and took him
and look at lilni mid say, 'He good,
very good.' Then ho made woman,'
and took lilni and look at him, and he
no (hue say one such word!"
That lust conclusion was uttered wltli
a inclining glance at the landlady.
Siniie years after this occurrence the
man who paid for the Indian's supper
was captured by redskins and carried
to Catiadit, where he was mtide to work
like a slave. One day an Indian came
to him, recalled to bis mind the occur
rence at the Litchfield tavern, and end
ed by saying:
"I that Indian. Now my turn pay.
1 see you home. Come with me."
And the redskin guided the man back
to Litchfield.

tain districts of Virginia, Kentucky,
Tennessee and North Carolina .there
are many places where money Is almost
unknown ami skins of wild animals,
butter and eggs and other commodities
are still exchanged for coffee and sugar
and calico. A recent visitor In this re
gion tells about seeing coon, squirrel
nud rabbit skins pnsscd over the coun
ter of a country store In exchange for
groceries. The owner of the store said
that sometimes he never saw any mon
ey for months at a time. Four times
year hide buyers come out from Lexing
ton and take the sktus off his hands.
Then he sends the money to Cincinnati
for a new stock of goods.

That was to say. while nil poets wero

'the Sixth Michigan cavalry, of the
famous Custer brigade, was commaud-
ped by a colonel who bad formerly been
a member of the Michigan bar. In
the early morning of the last day at
Gettyslierg his regiment, with others,

A medical missionary in Syria writes
that the vanity of Syrian women is
eometimes most amusingly exempli
fied. A short time ago a patient in
the hospital at Beriut succeeded in hav
ing her friends smuggle in to her a
uumebr of forbidden articles of food
and, numerous toilet accessories. In
her locker were discovered a piece of
lookingglass, a small quantity of
French chalk and a minute supply of
rouge, all intended to aid in the decor
ation of her person for the impending
operation. She protested tearfully
when the cosmetics were confiscated,
and refused to be comforted, saying
that 6he did not like to look so pale.'
