home Lincoln, Neb. during the
campaign, and on election day the
city gave a bigger majority against
Bryan than it did four years ago.'

President McKinley has issued
the usual Thanksgiving proclama
tion, setting the date of Thursday,'
November 29, iqoo. The following
is the proclamation:
"It has pleased Almighty God to
bring our nation in safety and honor
through another year. The works
of religion and charity have ever
been manifest. Our country
throughout all its extent, has been
blessed with abundant harvests.
Labor and the great industries havt
prospered beyond all ; precident.
Our commerce has spread all over
the world. Our power and influ
ence in the cause of freedom and
enlighlment have extended over
distant seas and lands. The lives
of our official representatives and
many of our people in China have
been marvelousls preserved. We
have been generally exempt from
pestilence and other great calami
ties, and even the tragic visitation
which overwhelmed the city of
Galveston made evident the senti
ments of sympathy and Christian
charity by virtue of which we are
one united people.
"Now, therefore, I, William Mc
Kinley President of the United
States, do hereby appoint and set
apart Thursday, the 29th day of
November next, to be observed by
all the people of the United States
at home or abroad, as a clay of
thanksgiving and praise to Him
who holds the nations in the hollow
of his hand. I recommend that
they gather in their several places
of worship and devoutly give Him
thanks for the prosperity where
with he has endowed us, for the
valor, devotion and . humanity of
our armies and navies, and for all
His benefits to us os individuals
and as a nation; and that they
humbly pray for the continuance of
his divine favor, for coucord and
atnily with other nations, and for
righteousness and peace iu all our
ways.

unto set my hand and caused the

McKinley carried 28 states this
year with 293 electoral votes, and
'.I states with 271 electoral votes

understand. Clearly, Mr. Bryan
has injured his own cause, and if
he still believes what he has been
advocating is light, he should go
home aiul give mi able and influ
ential man a chance. In express
ing a determination to keep right
on knocking the stuffing out of 16
to 1 and his other theories, Mr.
Bryan is inconsistent, illogical and
irrelevant; but that's bis business.

of explanations which do not explain.
