According to continuous Dem ocratic declaration the Republican party lias been busy forty years in working the ruin of the country, en slavement of the people, the crea tion of imperial dictators, the de struction ot the Constitution, and in the promotion of industrial and financial distater. livery Demo cratic platform during that period has emphatically declared these tiling?., -iiiu i lie Democratic press and speakers have made hysterical appeals to the people to save the country and sorrowing patriots have wept over the destruction of the republic. The same hysterical appeals are now being made and the same tears of mourning are be ing shed over exactly the same kind of corpse that has evoked them at quadrennial periods since the first election of Lincoln sealed the nation's doom, destroyed i s prosperity and put an end to our free institutions. Mr. Bryan rants and weeps as his predecessors ranted and wept, and over the self same things. Vet what is the na ture of the ruin wrought by forty years of Republican rule and to what extent have the people been deprived of their liberties? Here are some of the results. The popu lation of the country has increased from 3 1 ,443,32 1 to approximately 77,000,000, not counting our new territories. The total wealth of the nation has increased from less than $20,000,000,000 to nearly $100,000 coo.ooo. The per capita of wealth from $514 to $1300. The annua! manufactures from $1,885,861,676 to $12,777,078,775. Miles of rail road from about 20,000 to about njo.ooo. Value of exports from '5316,242,423 to $1, 203,931, 222. Value of imports lorin $353,616,- 1 19 to $61)7,148,489. Kxcess of ex potts over imports from a loss of to a gain1 of $506,782, 773. Annual wages paid from 378,878,966 to $3,056,635,200 be ing an increase of from ' $12 per .tpitaof population to $40. A system of finance has been adopt ed that gives us the best money in the world and the nation the highest credit of all the nations of the earth. The country has ceased to depend upon foreign capital for its develop-' mentand for its national loans, but has become a money lender to the other nations and a supplier of cap ital for the development of the re sources of far distant lands. It has by force of arms or threat of their use, preserved the liberty and terri torial integrity of its fellow repub lics on the American continent and redeemed from monarchial oppres sion some of the fairest islands of the western and eastern seas. All this has been done under the con tinuous charge of the Democratic party that the country was being ruined, its prosperity checked and the liberties of the people subverted and much of it has been accom plished in the face of its most bitter and obstinate opposition. .Now! again, we hear the same old cries and experience the same opposition to progress and national advance ment and prosperity. Let the re cord of the past speak for the future. Salem Statesman. Croker, the Tammany boss, says "McKinley was elected by the ig norant foreigners." That was a bright break, from a bright source. The majority of the so-called "ig norant foieigners" are fully as iu telligent as Boss Croker, who is mad because th.ey cannot be made to swallow Bryan's sophistries and fallacies.
