CLOSED DOORS. Little Korea Affords No Field for American Enterprise. In pursuance of the policy tiow pur sued by the Consular Service of as certaining the state of foreign fields as opportunities for American labor, cap ital and enterprise. Horace W. Allen, Consul General to Seoul, Korea, writes for tbe consular reports that Korea now employs no foreign military of ficers as advisers or Instructors In its army, and Is not likely to do so, owing to an agreement made with Russia when a large staff of Russian officers were allowed to leave. By this agree ment Korea announced her ability and Intention to dispense with further as sistance of that kind. The many requests from young men who have recently left the service of the United States asking for positions" in connection with the Korean army are futile. There is no demand for their services in Korea. There is no demand for foreign advisers to the Korean Government. Although two Americans who held such positions have recently died, their places have been filled, and there is no further de mand for assistance of that kind. The newspaper report that one of these ad visers had been receiving a salary of f 100,000 gold per annum Is entirely misleading: such positions pay from ?150 to $250 per month. There Is no demand for employes on the railroads )n Korea. Japanese control and oper ate the steam railroad, and Koreans find Americans are . employed uu the electric railroads, I believe the posi tions are all filled. Employment with the mines would have to be secured before coming to Korea. The agent of the mines In America Is II. A. Noble, representative of the Oriental Consoli dated Mining Company, San Francisco. Prospectors cannot operate in Korea, and there is no employment with the mines other than on wages. I am told the mining company has no lack of ap plicants. INGENIOUS MESSAGE BOX. Invention of a Canadian Is a Fort of an Automatic Office Boy. A letter-box might be styled a mes sage box. but the latter in reality Is something very different and does duty for the small boy who is supposed to preside over the office during, the ab sence of his employer. It consists, as shown, of a small writing desk attached to the outside of the office door. In it is a roll of paper. The Btrlp of paper is exposed In an opening In the top of the desk, In a position convenient to write upon. Means are provided to per mit of the paper being unrolled In a for ward direction, but a ratchet and pawl AUTOMATIC OFFICE nOV. prevents it from being turned In the op posite direction. After the paper Is moved forward it passes through a slit In the door, into the office. The convenience of this arrangement, flevlsed by George E. Toms of Vancou ver, Canada, Is evident. Suppose you call at an office and find It closed. With the paper and desk before you you would jot down the nature of your busi ness and give the roll a few turns for ward with your fingers, when your message would be passed Into tbe office. The next man coming along would do the same thing, but as he could not turn the paper backward he would be unable to discover what your message was, even If he wanted to pry Into your af fairs. Half Pennies. A movement Is on foot to put a one half cent coin In general use in the United States. , Several suggestions have been made to the government, and recently a document was present ed, signed by the heads of the big de partment stores of New York, Chicago, I'hlladelphla and Fittsburg, showing the need for this money In making change where articles are sold at 3. 7. 12. and at similar prices. The half cent coin has been in use In Chi cago for the last two years. So far the United States government has noth ing to do with issuing this new money. It In put out by individual firms and Is only recognized at the store from which it Is Issued. Memory Stronger in Summer. Scientists have discovered that the memory is stronger in summer than In winter. Among the worst foes of the memory are too much food, too much physical exercise, and, strangely enough, too much education. ft. sawn1' hi. "He insulted me," said tin legis lator. "Indeed?" returned the plain citi zen. "Offered you money, I suppose?" "Oh, it wasn't that," replied the legislator, "but he underestimated my price." Chicago Post. ANOTHER FAST TRAIN. The Rio Grande Western Kail way' "The Great Salt Lake Route," has re sumed its fast train services to the East, making the run from Portland to Chi cago in three days and a half. No lay over is necessary, and only one change of cars is made. Those who desire it have the privilege, however, of a day light stopover either at Salt Lake City or Denver. Three daily express trains are run, leaving Ogden. Utah, at 7:15 a. in., and 1:15 and 7 p. in. The morn ing train carries a through standard 6leeper to Chicago, via the Purlington Route, and the night train one via the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Rail way. The tourist sleepers and chair cars run daily as formerly through from Portland to Denver. Twice a week tourist excursion cars are run through from Portland to Boston. All trains carry dining cars, making the trip across the continent, via "The Great Salt Lake Route," most desira ble. The Rio Grande Western Railway is the only road running thiongh Salt Lake City, and with its connections the Denver & Rio Grande and the Col orado Midland takes the passenger through the famous Rocky mountain scenery of Colorado. For rates and all other information, address J. D. MANSFIELD, General Agent, 253 Washington St., Portland, Oregon. A new way of blasting rock is to place a cartridge of water into a shot hole and convert it into steam instant ly by electricity. This method is especially applicable in coal mines. IOO REWARD SIOO. Tbe readers of this paper will be pleased to jBarn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science bag been able to cure in all Us lagea, and tbat iscatarrh. IlaU'st'atarrh Cure is tbe only positive cure known to tbe medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional dis ease, requires a constltuilnnal treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure Is taken Internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying tbe founda tion of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the ennstitut'on and assisting nature In doing its work. Trade is depressed, and the people are in a miserable con dition of poverty. Successive officials, each more dishonest and corrupt than his predecessor, have sown the wind, and now the nation is reaping the whirlwind. The injury to soil by flooding by a high tide is variously estimated to last from five to 20 years. A late investiga tion in Essex, England, showed that the soil was left with two percent salt, mostly to the complete destruction of earthworms. Useful Kltehwn Table. A clever housewife has devised a kitchen table which is most servicable, especially in a small room. She had a carpenter make a second top for the ordinary table and had it fitted on to that with hinges at the back. The top shuts down tightly over the table and is used for the daily service, but when bread or pastry is to be made, it is raised, an.l a fresh pine surface, never used for anything else, is ready. A A Andrew Carnegie on Trusts. A director of the Standard Oil Com pany has recently published in the In dependent an article declaring trusts to be good for the workingman. To the May Century, Andrew Carnegie of the Carnegie Company, which rivals the Standard Oil for first place among the world's great corporations, will contribute an essay taking the same ground. In this article, which bears the title "Popular Illusions About Trusts," the great steel manufacturer argues that the evils of trusts are gen erally self-corrective; that no trust can live long unless it secures a virtual monopoly of the commodity it dals in; and that "the only people who have reason to fear trusts are those who trust them." In the same magazine "The Real Danger of Trusts" their menace to the independence of the individual and the state will be pointed out in a vigorous editorial. An Inappropriate Gift. "Oh, do tell it I" pleaded Miss Dum dum, eagerly. "It was an awfully nice one," said the first gril, "and Lieut. Bulbul meant it too. He said you waltzed divinely. He said he was awfully surprised, too, to find it out, so I know he meant it. He said he wouldn't have thought from seeing you walk tbat you could dance at all." Washington Post. Suppressed Kniotion. Decoration, to He Restored. The old question of restoring the traceries to the windows in the palace of the doges at Venice is again agitat ing artistic Italy. The exterior of the palace as it stands today was begun in the early part of the 13th century, and required 100 years for its completion. In 1577 fire destroyed all hut the walls. Up to that time the windows were en riched with beautiful tracery. N. Y. Woild. Fnfjr and Knot.
