taker, has been here learning the

Charlie Litchfield has given his
residence a fine coat of paint and it
is as white as snow quite an im
provment. It is reported that the old ladv
Helms is having a very poor spell.
She is very old and likely to pass
away at any time. ;
Mrs. pordon and son Arthur ar
rived Saturday from Oakland, Cal.
They are old-time residents of the
bay and their many friends will bid
them welcome.
H. K. Lugger and family went
up Pool's slough the first of the
week to visit at the home of P.
Schirmer, where everything that is
good is growing strawberries in
particular.
Van Boone's little girl came very
near being severely burned last
Friday. Her clothes accidentally,
took fire from the stove. In trying
to extinguish it Van got a badly
burned hand.
'Mrs. Blue and Gertrude Litch
field took a walk over the wagon
road to the beach Monday and put
in their spare time gathering wild
strawberries. They report a good
time and plenty ot berries.

The people of otu quiet little town
were made to feel very sad by the
sudden death of Mrs. Whitnev.
wife of ex-Postmaster M. T. Whit
ney, fehe died between 2 and
o'clock, Saturday morning, June 9.
She awoke Mr. Whitnev about 2
o'clock by saying that she felt "very
queer," and began to choke up at
once, and soon became unconcious.
Mr. Whitney worked with all his
mijfht to resuscitate her, and appar
ently succeeded, but only for a few
minutes, when she choked up
again. All was done for her that
Mr. Whitney and the neighbor
women who came in knew would
bj likely to revive her. but all their
efforts proved to be futile. Tele
grams were sent to Ira Whitney,
who was attending the O. A. C. at
Corwdlis, and to his sister Neva,
who is at the Monmouth collage,
and tftey both came on the evening
tiai.i. It is indeed a hard blow to
the family, and not on the family
only, but on the whole community.
She was so kind to all with whom
she came in contact. She was a-.;
efficient nurse in case of sickness,
and seemed to know just what to
do to relieve the suffering or dis
tressed. She always had a smile
aiul a kind word for all around her,
and ruled her household with kind
ness. None knew her but to re
spect and love her, and a kindly
remembrance of her w ill be cher
ished for many years to come by
her neighbors, and our hearts are

christian and her daiiy life corre
sponded to her profession, and re

(Parker) Whitney was born Janu
ary 26, 1S55, in Burns township,
Henry county, Illinois, was mar
ried to M. T. Whitney December
30, 1S75. and died June 9, 1900,
aged 45 years 4 months and n days.

seryman, returned from California
last week. He likes Webfoot the
best and expects to make it his
home hereafter. His wife, .who has
been very ill, is recovering rapidly.
Mrs. J. K. Wilson arrived home
from Illinois the first of the month,
where she has been visiting since
last December. Her opinion is that
Oregon is the best state to live in
after all.
Mr.. Mason, the merchant and
goat-raiser, is having an addition
put on the back of his store to make
more room for goods.
D. J. Chitwood cut his grass theK
first of the week. His motto is:
"Make hay while the sun shines."
