The air chamber is contained between an upper aud lower soh and is so anangud that n new supply of air can be pumped luto it from a valve open ing at the heel. It is claimed Unit a man wearing a pair of these shoes will be saved the constant Jar resulting from walking over hard pavements, and that consequently his health will be greatly Improved and his lfe prolonged. A Chicago m a n has just secured a patent on a shoe which opens at tha back instead of the front,, as Is custom-! ary. The part which serves as a tongue in the new arrange ment is so large that when it is unfast ened it gives free access to the shoe, so that the foot can be slipped in over the counter. Iustead of laces or buttons the shoe is fastened with ball fasten ers, one row on either side fastening on to the tongue or "quarter," thus secur ing the shoe to the font and doing away with overlapping edges. A Legles Wheelbarrow. Metal barrows are coming in slowly, but none the less surely, this being an other of the many instances in which steel and structural Iron are supplant ing the time-honored wood. They are designed for work in mines, and boin ' indestructible and cheap they nre es pecially adapted for the use of contrac tors. The body is hung very low, and Is of such a shape and strength that little damage can be done to it, even though It be severely handled. The frame bars and handles nre formed of one continuous piece of pipe. The wheel Is also especially designed, the hub con sisting of two interlocking clutches, between which the spokes, consisting of pieces of bar iron bent so as to form two spokes, are held. Not the least valuable feature of this barrow, the invention of William .Tames Freed, of Eureka, Utah, is the fact that if damaged It can be repaired by ordinary mechanics, all the parts being simply put together and designed with that end in view. The absence of logs, it will be noticed. Is interesting, aud allows the barrow to rest flat on the ground, so that it may be quickly and easily filled and dumped. The legs, it is asserted, nre one of the weakest parts of the ordin ary wheelbarrow, and are apt to be come loose and rickety. Hunger the Best Sauce. There nre many good old stories that nre worth reviving. Here Is one about Henry VIII., who took to the crown nil the property of the church, and who, during his reign, had ninny jokes at the expense of the abbots and tlic clergy. On one occasion he had been hunting in Epping forest, and lia.l come to Waltham Abbey alone, dis guised as one of his owu guard. Dinner Mas Just ready, and he was Invited to the abbot's table. His appetite was so good that the abbot at last exclaimed, unaware whom he was addressing, "I would willingly give a hundred pounds on condition I could food as heartily on beef as thou dost!" A few days later the abbot was mysteriously sent for, taken to London, and committed to the Tower, where for some time he was fed on bread and water, wondering the while what crime he hnd committed. One day, however, a sirloin of beef was set before him, and his hearty attack thereon showed that the strict regimen of his captivity had worked wonders. Upon this the merry monarch himself suddenly entered and demanded a hundred pounds, the reward the abbot had so rashly promised for the restora tion of his appetite.
